Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Koolsville's New Pad - Finally!! Some new photos :-) 121Jan 27, 2011 1:56 pm Are you the owner of Hula Bula Bar or just their biggest fan??!! I wanted our front stone wall to be like your colour, we only got to pick off catalogue. Re: Koolsville's New Pad - 6 Months on... 122May 14, 2011 10:22 pm OMG - how fast did 6 months go!!! Not too much has happened really - we haven't sold our other house yet, so there hasn't been and funds to do much. No $ = no reverse cycle air conditioning/heating = HOT summer and COLD winter. We also haven't finished the kitchen (no splashback and no overbench cupboards and, if you can believe it, NO HANDLES on the cupboards/drawers (opening from the bottom of them is great for your thighs....). Ok, the handles is just us being lazy. The gardens were all done at the start (can't handle sand) and are growing along really well. Loving the Sir Walter buffalo. We have the best lawn in the street because DH mows it every week and gives it lots of food. (Poor thing also has to mow the lawn/do the gardens at the other house too). In terms of 6 month maintenance.... not too much to do. There are the standard cracks in the cornices, but I don't want any tradesmen in my house with putty and paint over my floors and other things, I'll fix that myself. Our bedroom door doesn't stay closed (catch might need fixing?) The WIL door frame actually looks like its twisted, or the door has been put on wrong. It has trouble holding the catch. One of the plugs in the ensuite goes down and won't come up, so that needs replacing. The grout in all the bathrooms and toilets was just a bad job, but I've learned to live with it, and might not bother mentioning it. Other things to fix include the movement cracks around the ceiling in the verandah and also in the gables on the front of the house. Anything I'd do differently looking back??? Hmmmm I'd probably put the wardrobes in the minor bedrooms out under the eaves to make the rooms bigger (I actually did this on one of the plans when I asked for changes and they ignored it); I'd get grey grout instead of white! The tile company made it white and I didn't think to change it; I'd put some drawers in the laundry instead of all cupboards (love the pull out hamper we got though); I'd put a built in cupboard in the study; I would have pushed harder for the unobstructed windows around the alfresco (instead of having bricks between doors/windows) rather than listen to the guy who said "it will cost more" and didn't even bother getting it quoted for me. What am I glad I did? Kitchen: Ceaserstone and vinyl wrap, 900mm appliances, lots of big drawers. Bathroom: our own art deco style mirrors/handles/lights. Would have liked stone benches here too, but couldn't stretch the budget. Moved laundry from off garage at front to the back of house (in place of 5th bedroom) and added hamper and a big linen cupboard! I put an extra tap in - on the pier off the alfresco for the garden around there (save us getting a hose from the back of the house). I'm glad we pushed for our elevation - our house certainly stands out. I Love It! We got our stone work done by Beauty Stone after handover - saved us money and didn't limit our choices. I'd use a differnet concrete company for the driveway... Would I build again? Believe it or not, I would. But not with DAH - caused us too much stress on this occasion. I put it down to bad luck in terms of the people/products we were dealing with. Dragonflychic - sorry for tardy response!! No, we don't own the Hula Bula... Tiki is a pretty big thing with heaps of bars around the world, populuar in the 50s. We love having a tiki bar in our house it because it reminds us of going on holidays to hawaii - lots of Mai Tais with friends! We visted a great tiki bar in Las Vegas not long ago called Frankies - fabulous! Well, this might be my last update - given my build is now completely over. If I ever finish my kitchen, I might post and update Good luck with all your builds! Finally we can close the book on that saga. Some other pics of house (kitchen STILL not finished... soon...)
