Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 08, 2010 10:24 pm Hi, We are building in Perth and going to Prestart next Monday. We have chosen all our bathroom, ensuite and laundry tiles and opted for a larger tile of 330 x 330. Our contract included 200x 200 tiles at $44 m2. We knew laying costs for a larger tile were about $5 - $8 extra m2 for larger tiles and we were happy with that, however after getting home I noticed that the tile had 'glazed porcelian' written on it, although the lady at the tile place did not mention it. I emailed the builder and he responded saying that they cost an extra $40 m2 on top of the extra $5 -$8 m2 which kind of blows our budget and means we have to start all over again with our selection . Does this sound like a reasonable cost to you? This is a smaller building company that says they are happy to change things. Re: Glazed porcelian tiles 2Feb 08, 2010 10:48 pm Like you, the tiles in the builder's standard range were 200 x 200mm at $44m2, but obviously these would be too small for the living areas. (I have never known anyone to go with this size.) Anyway, we upgraded to a 330 x 330mm (not porcelain) and the cost was around $1600 extra. Does not make much sense really as they would probably be using less grout and actually lay less tiles. But 200 x 200mm tiles would look silly in the living areas. Sorry, been a long day. Seriously though, I think this is standard as we have also been charged extra - havent worked it out exactly how much but we were well overspent anyway on the tiling Depends how much you like the tiles (and whether you can be bothered to go back to square one), unless you have a huge bathroom/laundry the cost might not be too much......... Re: Glazed porcelian tiles 4Feb 09, 2010 1:27 am we had deleted laundry floor tiling as we werent sure what flooring we were having for the rest of the area. Now that we have confirmed timber in the living area, we asked the builder to include the laundry floor tiling with polished porcelain 400x400 size. The laundry size is 8 m2 plus half tile wall tiling around the walls of 1.95m width by 3.95m length. The builder is charging us $1540. This i think is ridiculous.
