G'day and congrats on moving in. Do you already have the trench with the 32mm conduit installed from the pit to your house? If not you are looking at approx $440.00 from people like Techlife to do that for you. Once you have the conduit running to your home and you have the ONT (little grey box) on the side it is then a case of connecting it to the network. I am of the understanding that you can get a connection pack for $660.00. Once again this was the quote from Techlife, an Opticomm authorised installer. You can also try Argus technologies, they service the area as well. The $660.00 cover the connection or "running through" of the cable through your conduit and connecting you to the fiber point at your pit. You will then be able to receive your free to air via the cable provided you have your wiring in place inside the house. As part of this deal you receive 6months access to Internode for your internet on the 25Mbps with 5 Gb quota to use a month. You also receive 6 months with a POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service). After the six months it is entirely up to you which way you go. You can either continue to use Internode (I have them already at my current house and will continue to use them), or you can then select from the other service providers that come on board. From my research and reading on the subject they include ISP's such as iiNet, Adam and more to be announced. Hope this has been of some help to you. Building Charleton 283 with Henley. That is safer than having only fibre as you will still have a telephone service if the Internet goes down. If you are dependent on VOIP, then you will lose the use of your telephone when the Internet is not available. Good luck if that's the case! Re: Optical Fibre internet in Alamanda 6Feb 06, 2010 3:15 pm Have you had a bad experience at all? I've been running VOIP over iiNet Naked DSL for 18 months, no problems whatsoever. You wouldn't know the difference between that and a standard telephone service. Not sure how the Opticomm guys do it, but you may find that the phone service provided isn't actually VOIP. Yes, it runs over the same fibre, but I'm pretty certain it's not dependant on the internet connection. Jason. POTS is only available if you have copper. It's not true POTS. It's just a "normal" phone connection provided over fibre. The ONI is installed with a UPS to ensure the phone service is operational even if you lose mains power. It'll even drive your Internet connect for a while, but with the power out in the house, you'll need a laptop to take advantage of it. The underlying technology for the phone service is VOIP, though. The ONI just presents that as a standard PSTN connection to the home wiring system. Re: Optical Fibre internet in Alamanda 8Feb 06, 2010 9:05 pm Thank you for that clarification, Djelibeybi. I believe it is important that we use the correct terminology so people are aware of the drawbacks of this system. No Internet = no phone. Internet problems = phone problems. As you can tell, I'm not enamoured with VOIP as the main telephone connection due to the unreliable nature of Internet connection and the poor support for people with problems that is provided by the telcos.
