Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 26, 2010 9:16 pm Hi everyone, We have been visiting the forum sporadically for the last twelve months, but have to get started on the new ancestral home. We have been to display homes everywhere, but realise that we need to go with a custom jobbie. Our current house has a 3 metre wide veranda at the back with retractable clothslines, meaning clothes stay on the line 'til they are dry. We would like to do the same thing across the back of our block at Point Cook, which has a 3 metre easement across the back, which is useless for anything else. Although we have to leave the ground clear for Big Brother to dig up at his convenience, it strikes me that I could have a veranda (with retractable clothesline underneath) that is hinged and drops down out of the way, if they ever want to come and dig. Has anyone ever done some thing like this? I have many wild and wacky ideas, which I will reveal over time, but this one tells me how far I need to be from the end of the block, as I develop the rest of my ideas. Re: Folding Veranda Roof 2Jan 26, 2010 10:07 pm Hi and Welcome! your idea sounds pretty cool (cant wait to read about more of your 'ideas') but maybe your first port of call should be the council? Not sure at all on where else you could go on this one, sorry. Re: Folding Veranda Roof 3Jan 26, 2010 10:42 pm There was a home in a green display village in Canberra a few years ago that had one of these. The display village is no longer open, but you might be able to find info on it somewhere online... It was similar to your description - frames on hinges attached to the house. Worked a treat!! Was very cool. Although they did it for shade. It was height adjustable using poles (within poles, slide and secure to change the height), and could be lifted upwards to allow more sun or downwards to create shade (or completely cover the windows). Can't see why you couldn't do a similar thing using a rain-proof covering. Re: Folding Veranda Roof 5Jan 27, 2010 2:38 pm Quote: Sounds like a folding arm awning could suit your needs? My parent's just put one in over their deck. They aren't cheap though.. Blog is now up - http://www.jbdave.blogspot.com/ Re: Folding Veranda Roof 6Jan 27, 2010 4:17 pm Got everyone excited for nothing. Went to see City West Water and Wyndham Council today, and they will let us build on the easement subject to where we position the veranda posts, and the position of the pipes mean that we can meet that stipulation. Thats the first hurdle crossed. i think option 2 is much better with easy access to the garden without having to walk through the new sunroom which makes it a better room for guests and TV .a simple… 2 8228 There may be answers here but can't find anything. I have a closed in veranda, four windows. North facing, just had sunblock blinds installed. A bit cooler (actually… 0 2980 2 9448 |
