Re: HELP! Advise on bathroom tiles that has been laid! 2Jan 24, 2010 2:41 am Well I'm no expert.. but that would be really annoying if it were in my bathroom. It looks as tho something is not level for that to happen. Built with New Generation (Summit Homes) We own land!... with a slab on it! Plus a shell of a house with stuff inside ! Re: HELP! Advise on bathroom tiles that has been laid! 3Jan 24, 2010 7:06 am Mmm that would definately annoy me if it was in my bathroom but not entirely sure if it means they have done something wrong or not, think it just means that im picky and would like everything to line up nicely. Re: HELP! Advise on bathroom tiles that has been laid! 5Jan 28, 2010 11:13 am Well guys, spoke to my site supervisor and he refuses to help. he says all hobs they do look like that... i told him i dont need a 15 degree angle for water to flow. he said the tiler is very experienced. he said there is nothing that can be done. i told him its not acceptable. he said nothing can be done that's just the way it is. Re: HELP! Advise on bathroom tiles that has been laid! 6Jan 28, 2010 12:50 pm Hard to actually tell what we are looking at but is it a niche / shelf type thing in a shower? If that is the case then they have slightly angled it downwards to drain the water towards the drain? It is more noticeable in your case because of the difference in your tiles. We have a large niche in our main ensuite shower but the whole wall is tiled in the same tile so you can't notice the fall so much. If it isn't a niche then feel free to ignore this..... Some things are worth waiting for. Re: HELP! Hi Kyton... this is another pic... not sure what niche is? its like a hob/seat in the shower.. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FM1ilSreJ74/S ... /tile7.jpg Siteworks 18Sep09;Footings 23Sep09;Slabdown 24Sep09;Bricks 30Oct09;Roof starts 2Nov09;Electrical wiring completed;Roof tiles complete; Int walls plastered;Ceilings painted; Ext walls rendered;door frames painted; Bathroom tiling nearly there! Re: HELP! Advise on bathroom tiles that has been laid! 8Jan 28, 2010 1:02 pm Yeah seat/shelf whatever its called, I have to agree with the builder. If its not on the angle slightly water will pool there from the shower. I renovated a bathroom once and they did the same thing on a shelf I had requested as the water was directed right onto it. Seems your shower will be directed at it also. It might look annoying now but will save you the hassle later if the water pooling did any damage. NO EXPECTATIONS, NO DISAPPOINTMENTS! Advise on bathroom tiles that has been laid! 9Jan 28, 2010 1:20 pm You need to have a fall there to stop any possible pooling of water on the tiled ledge. If they left 1 in 100 for the wall it would be enough. It is the right thing to do. Pity they did not mitre the edge of the tile, therefore eliminating that coloured edge you see. Cheers Charlie Re: HELP! Advise on bathroom tiles that has been laid! 10Jan 28, 2010 1:28 pm Yep agree with Boiselfish and Zedman - the builder actually has done the correct thing. Our niche is a shelf which is inset into the wall along the back of the shower - it is about 30cm high and close to 1.5m long - it too has a slight lean forward to allow for run-off. Otherwise water would pool and weaken eventually the grout in the back of the shelf. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: HELP! Advise on bathroom tiles that has been laid! 11Jan 28, 2010 3:55 pm Saying that, it wouldnt be so visable if it was above the like of that horizontal tile. I wonder if its possible to take of the tiles laying on top and somehow raise the height slightly maybe with grout so the lowest part of the tile is above that horizontal line. If not it wont be nearly so visable when its grouted. THE LIGHT OF MY LIFE IS 495 SQM OF BEACH SAND AND WEEDS! http://missvintageshouseofpain.blogspot.com/ Re: HELP! Advise on bathroom tiles that has been laid! 12Jan 28, 2010 8:08 pm It wouldn’t be so visible HAD they told you that’s how they do it before you chose a feature tile for that space. Advise on bathroom tiles that has been laid! 13Jan 29, 2010 9:28 am Hi boiselfish, Zedman, kyton, Missvintage and Michelle. Thank you all for your responses. Boiselfish - you're probably right. i'll just get used to it. I've decided to accept it. I guess after sometime, i wont notice it anymore. it would'nt have been an issue i guess if the tiles were the same colour. Zedman - Yes, thats what i wanted just a slight fall. When i had my meeting with the tiler, i told her to mitre the tiles and she said she cannot do it as tiles are ordered mitred? she said we should have ordered mitred tiles. Kyton - Thanks. I guess like i said, i'll accept it. not a huge big of a deal anyway. there will be other things i need to look into for sure. I find myself getting stress over these things and its not good for me. MissVintage - I thought of that too, but anyways they are not going to do anything. Michelle - They don't tell or suggest anything to us. thats the way it is with some builders i guess. they expect you to know everything like as if i am building my 100th house! We didn't know about mitred tiles until just before our meeting with the tiler. Re: HELP! Advise on bathroom tiles that has been laid! 14Jan 30, 2010 8:55 am Hi G Girl Not to be rude to your tiler...but that is crap. No tiles come mitred these days...the tilers do it themselves. It's something they dont like doing because it takes extra time to do. A decent tradesperson will always mitre or as a minimium trim an exposed edge. Sorry, but get a little peved off when I here tilers say such things... Cheers Charlie Re: HELP! This is what i feel as well but i the thing is i cannot do anything about it because it was not asked for in my contract as well. i had a look the ensuite floor tiles laid. the tiles have been laid further apart then i thought it would be. the walls tiles have been laid much closer than the floor ones. any reason for this?? i was dissapointed when i saw it. is there a max distance between each tile? how do i tell them thats not i wanted? can i say that? or is that up to the tiler to decide? its not evenly laid at some areas too. Re: HELP! Advise on bathroom tiles that has been laid! 17Feb 03, 2010 9:41 am They may have dobe that to attempt to align the floor tiles with the wall tile. I point out to all my clients that even with the spanish lines we import there is no guarantee that the tiles will be exactly the same size - wall to floor. Every time tiles are fired we get shad variation but alsop calibre(size) variation. So for example your wall may be exactly 330x600 but the matching floor could be 328x328. The options are either to widen one joint to suit or try not to align the tiles. This is usually not a drama as the variation in grout joints form wall to floor can be quite small. But if aligning the wall to the floor means say a 5mm grout joint, you would also mis align the tiles to eliminate such a horrible joint. Cheers Charlie Re: HELP! Re: HELP! Advise on bathroom tiles that has been laid! 19Feb 03, 2010 3:05 pm Yes the lipping looks bad. Is that lipped tile near a drain...? As some inexperienced tilers find it harder to get a fall with a larger tile and can lead to bad lipping if the layout isnt planned right. Not that that is a problem with 300x300...any bigger than 330's then it is not possible. Unless there is sizing in the tiles, there is no need for such a larger joint and it being irregular. Also if the same tile is on the wall there joints should be uniform. As long as its the exact same tile from the same batch. Cheers Charlie Re: HELP! Yes the tiles are the exactly the same from the same batch. So is it arguable with the supervisor to have it redone you think?
