Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 21, 2010 10:15 am I like a couple, but I know for a FACT that I wont like it in a year or 2!! My taste changes ALL the time! Im thinking about no **GASP** feature tiles ANYwhere in the house. Just white, white, white!! I know this house will be so bland and boring. Very neutral colours all through, a brownish floor tile and same carpet. But I also know how you can change a look with furniture/pictures/colour. Anyone else go with NO feature tiles anywhere?? I havnt seen any pics. Re: To feature tile or not to feature tile????? 2Jan 21, 2010 10:29 am In the bathrooms you could do one wall in a contrasting tile - so not a feature tile as such but not all white. Maybe you could do the floor in the brown colour and run it up one all and the rest in white? I think this is what we are going to do but with greys. Re: To feature tile or not to feature tile????? 3Jan 21, 2010 10:41 am We have selected plain white gloss tiles for all bathroom walls to 2m high. I figure with changing tastes and trends white never goes away and you can colour it up with towels and accessories any time. Just my 2c NO EXPECTATIONS, NO DISAPPOINTMENTS! I won't be having feature tiles either. Someone on here somewhere wrote that they are like a date stamp and I totally agree.. I have some from the late 70's in my current house and they are just horrendous. Re: To feature tile or not to feature tile????? 5Jan 21, 2010 10:52 am Yeah I kind of think of the floor tile continuing up the wall as a feature?? I figure, if Im going to do that I may aswell do a feature tile, as what ever I would choose would be subtle anyway. AND i figure it would save us about $400 by not doing a feature Re: To feature tile or not to feature tile????? 6Jan 21, 2010 11:32 am yes... today's feature tile is tomorrow's "what the $%#@$ was I thinking tile" in a few years time. Use towels & other movable items to add colour. Re: To feature tile or not to feature tile????? 7Jan 21, 2010 11:39 am My MIL's 22 year old house has an entirely white bathroom and it looks brand new and modern! When she built the rage was 80's grey & pink, boy is she glad she went white! She just changes the towels/pot plant/flowers etc from time to time to update it. Re: To feature tile or not to feature tile????? 8Jan 21, 2010 11:43 am We will not be having any feature tiles Re: To feature tile or not to feature tile????? 9Jan 21, 2010 11:46 am What I'm doing is white tiles, with darker floor and far wall. That is, three walls are white and the floor and one wall are darker. This gives a darker floor and darker grout which is handy as it marks less readily and gives you a feature wall. Pick a netral colur such as brown or grey and you can't go wrong. As others have said, feature tiles date (and some are ugly from day one). Use towels & other movable items to add colour. I so agree! As much as I think feature tiles can look fab, I'm very concerned about them dating also. Would love to do all white in my bathrooms, however am a touch concerned about keeping all that grout nice and clean even if they are sealed. My DH wants the black and white chequered (sp?) look on the floor tiles, but again worried about dating even though I think its kind of a classic look. Re: To feature tile or not to feature tile????? 12Jan 21, 2010 12:56 pm I've renovated two bathrooms and gone all white and they haven't dated at all. In fact we nearly bought the exact same tile 10 years later that we used in our first house. Instead we did a slight change with a little grey marble on a white type tile on the floor with grey/natural grout instead. Walls we stayed with all white and white grout. There is no way that you can tell with our first bathroom that it is 11 years old, it still looked newish. Our current bathroom only looks newer because we used a more modern vanity. As I look around at the vanities at the moment with the basin's above the benchtop I think they will be like a date stamp on the bathroom perhaps. Call me boring perhaps but I'd rather a bathroom that doesn't date than one that is the current fashion trend. Fernyhouse what a great idea with the grey marble on a white tile - a very nice variation. I think I must pick your brains for ideas for my bathrooms! I have four to deck out (2 ensuites, 1 guest and a master bath) and these rooms are freaking me out the most! I should be able to put up my final plans hopefully tomorrow and then would love to hear your ideas and suggestions Re: To feature tile or not to feature tile????? 14Jan 21, 2010 1:16 pm Thanks Ronnie, I'm no decorator at all and prefer all my decorating to be things that won't date rather than the current trend. My husband is trying to convince me to avoid the all white bathroom again but I'm pretty sure I want it neutral and new bath towels and accessories and curtains instead. I'm definately not getting all white floor grout again though, after about 5 years it was quite a pain. Re: To feature tile or not to feature tile????? 15Jan 21, 2010 4:38 pm Don't you think most things will date? In the bathroom it could be the vanity basins, tapware, doors, handles, screens, showers even. Outside of the bathroom it could be the doors, floor covering, lighting, even house styles ... (Remember when formal dining and formal lounges were the norm) no one had powder rooms etc. or "Al Fresco's" and outside kitchens were just a bbq So my advice, live for the moment. It's your home, your style and as long as you don't go crazy ... who cares? Or even if you wanted to go crazy, do it, that could be your style and what you like. Unless you are planning to sell it within the next few years, or it's an investment property ... do what you like and want and enjoy living in. It's your space. It's all down to personal choice, if you love a feature tile, go for it ... if you know you won't like it in a year, don't do it. Either way will look great. It's all down to personal taste. I have gone white tile in our bathroom too, but with a feature mossaic, which I love. Feature tiles can all be tastelly and subtly done. Good luck Re: To feature tile or not to feature tile????? 16Jan 21, 2010 5:11 pm Well the way I see it is, it's my bathroom, I use it, and if I want a feature tile to convey my idea of design or to dictate my personality then I think I shall have it. If it makes me feel good when I use that room then that's what I will have, sort of like a piece of artwork really. I'm having a pebbley look feature tile because I love the tropical spa type look and it makes me feel good. Some like Rembrandts, some don't. I think it should be up to you, not what a time or fad or whatever dictates. That's just my opinion and I'm sticking to it. You should have what you like and what makes you www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: To feature tile or not to feature tile????? 17Jan 21, 2010 7:04 pm I never said I was worried about anything dating I dont give a crap really if things date, as long as i like it thats all i care about., What i said was that i love it today, ill hate it next month! So im thinking of not doing it at ALL ....and wanted to know if others had gone 'feature free' as it seems like such a big part of peoples choices when it comes to colours. Feature free it is!!!............this week Re: To feature tile or not to feature tile????? 18Jan 21, 2010 7:12 pm Good on you! Do what feels right. It's your house after all. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: To feature tile or not to feature tile????? 19Jan 21, 2010 7:24 pm If getting tired of it is the main worry, you can always be clever about where you place feature tiles. For instance, a tiled vanity splashback can be easy to change (depending on the design of the room and the vanity, of course). For maybe $100-$500 worth of tiles and probably $100-$200 labour, you could change it every year if you like. You can add colour, texture and style with laminates, handles and so on anyway, so there are lots of ways to make a bathroom look really special, not just tiles. hmmm id assume youll get hit with the "natural product therefore variation in colour etc" excuse.
