Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 19, 2010 2:51 pm We have put this through all our 'living' areas (entry, study, living, kitchen, family, meals) But have cornice in the hall, all the bedrooms, bathroom, laundry and toilet. I am not sold on it, I ind of feel as though it looks 'unfinished' like someone has 'forgot' to cornice some of the house! But my husband thinks its great and really really really wants it. He hasnt had much say cos hes pretty cruisy, and couldnt care less, but im just not sure. Its not an option to put it right through due to cost, so thats why we can only justify what we have, but will it look wrong by only doing some parts of the home? And anyone have pics of it?? THANKS Re: sqaure set cornice....thoughts? 2Jan 19, 2010 2:59 pm I would think it would look odd having cornice in areas like the hallways, then square set in the living areas. How do you finish one to the other (unless you have bulkheads). I'll post some pics of my house under construction later on. I have square set throughout. I also have it in my current home. I think it looks more modern and gives a "cleaner" look to the ceilings. You have to walk through a doorway to go into the hall, so the familyroom would be square set, and you walk through the doorway, which would be the hall, with cornice. It wouldnt be like a four walled room that had 3 corniced walls and one square set Re: sqaure set cornice....thoughts? 4Jan 19, 2010 3:29 pm If you walk through a doorway, then it's not a problem. A lot of hallways however don't have doors so the ceiling continues through (unless a bulkhead is used over the entryway to the hall). The cornice would have to stop somewhere, and you would be looking at the side of it where it joins the square set. With a door however you have plasterboard over the door, so the hallway becomes more like a room, with the cornice surrounding the perimeter. That being said, you'll probably be able to see the cornice from your living areas. If you can handle seeing two different ceiling finishes then it won't be a problem. Personally, in my opinion I wouldn't do half a house in cornice and half in square set. I would notice it every time I walked into a room. Re: sqaure set cornice....thoughts? 6Jan 19, 2010 3:39 pm It would certainly look better keeping all the main areas as one finish, and the closed off rooms as another. I can say that square set looks nice. I don't think it looks unfinished at all. In the end though, it's up to you if you will be happy with two different finishes. Loving your house so far, cant wait to see it finished! Yeah I think I will ring tomorrow to get the hallway square. Id be happy to have the whole rest of the house 'normal' Im still not sold on it, but hopefully I will surprise myself! Re: sqaure set cornice....thoughts? 8Jan 19, 2010 3:45 pm Our house is going to have four step cornice throughout but I think we are having square in the bathrooms. If the four step finishes at the end of a room they step it down like steps (so hard to explain). We are having three step upstairs as we dont have the higher ceilings upstairs. I personally think it would look ok having it in the areas you have said as long as there is a clear difference between those and where the normal cornice starts. Could you perhaps do the thin cornice in other areas to kind of lower the difference between the two? Re: sqaure set cornice....thoughts? 9Jan 19, 2010 3:49 pm On the contrary, I don't think square set looks unfinished at all. Cornices are cheaper because it means that the plasterers DON'T have to finish correctly. They hide the gaps that are otherwise difficult to finish. The only time I really like cornices are the modern step and shadow styles Squareset looks much more modern and classy IMHO. If you were building federation style or renovating an old house in keeping with original, then cornices are required to make it look finished. If you're building a modern house, squareset is icing on the cake!! Re: sqaure set cornice....thoughts? 10Jan 19, 2010 3:56 pm Yeah thats what our builder said, that it costs heaps more cos you have to have a good plasterer to do it perfect and a great painter to finish it off! You cant use cornice to 'hide' bits I dont think we have an option for any other cornice and I dont think ill worry now as the contracts are all done! But I DO hope Ill be able to square up the hall, cant see why not, its extra $$$$ for them! And that way, the only thing people will really notice is the toilet and bathroom, as no-one will really be in ours or the kids rooms, and really, if anyone comments on how or if they look weird different, ill give them a ***insert little smiley icon sticking up his finger here *** oh and Im super excited ive started a BLOG!!! And I already have a (read ONE) follower!!!! Isnt that VUNDERFUL!! Re: sqaure set cornice....thoughts? 11Jan 19, 2010 5:37 pm ive been looking at photos to try and get used to the 'feel' of this look and came across this home http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgu ... G%26um%3D1 It looks like they have done what im doing looks to me that the bulk of the home is square set and prob 'normal' through the rest! Makes me feel heaps happier with my choice and im starting to warm to the look Re: sqaure set cornice....thoughts? 12Jan 19, 2010 7:13 pm In that house I only noticed the bathroom with cornices. The house certainly looks better with square set cornices and woudl look perfect if the bathroom was also square set. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: sqaure set cornice....thoughts? 13Jan 19, 2010 7:20 pm I wonder though if its worth it??? Cos really, how much notice will I take? Its one thing thinking about it now, but i dont think ill be walking around looking at the roof the whole time. And I just dont think its worth the extra couple of thousand. Im going to stick with the original I just called the builder to add square set to the hall. And ill leave the b'rooms and wet areas corniced Re: sqaure set cornice....thoughts? 14Jan 19, 2010 10:46 pm our builder does all living areas and master bedroom incl ensuite in square set by default, with cornices on bathrooms, laundry and other bedrooms. As such, I really wouldn't think it would be strange at all to do what you're thinking. We paid the extra to have square set throughout, although couldn't justify the garage We couldn't care less that there are cornices in there The photo is not really clear but to me it looks like twist in the cornice.
