Internet is back. With this brilliant weather this weekend we’ve been trying to sort out some of the mess in the front yard ~ argh ~ a lot of work. Particularly challenging is the slurry waste from the concreting which has hardened to a crust on the front garden beds. A lot of the soil that came out of the front was good, and we can re-use it, however we have to get the slurry waste *out* of it first. I will pop up some glamourous pics of our slurry ~ I’ll have to start a landscaping thread too! But anyway, in the meantime here’s a big catchup. Apologies if you aren’t interested in drainage or driveway! Not too much done inside at this stage (I still can’t find many things). I guess as many people find, some of our old furniture just doesn’t work well in this house ~ but some really does! Surprisingly. Sadly we have had to retire quite a number of bookshelves and a wall unit to the garage. They are all 20+ years old ~ from when I first moved out of home!!! Mostly very old Ikea. The wall unit in particular has been taken apart + put back together 7 times!! So the garage features *extensive* shelving! However our books are still boxed, hanging out to unpack them. The phone line trenching: OK, this is the moment, the day before handover, when we realised that we were going to get the house with the telephone line hanging out of the wall like this. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Because, silly us, we *assumed* that the phone line would be trenched together with the other utilities. WRONG. Don’t assume this! (Particularly if you are a kdrb.) Look how hard the ground is, the day before handover. http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Daybeforeh-over0225Sept11.jpg What a shame that the plumber, who we had lined up for the next day, was a day and a half late. Which lead us to that day where we had a month’s rainfall in one day. So the drainage digging was much s l o w e r work that it needed to be… Provided it all works, that's the main thing. Lucky we hadn't given notice yet at this point. Drainage plumbing: http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drainagept-10129Sept11.jpg http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drainagept-10229Sept11.jpg Channel grate drain behind garage. http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drainagept-10329Sept11.jpg Driveway drain line as seen from the balcony. http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drainagept-10429Sept11.jpg Drainage pipe will go underneath circular driveway (letterbox side). http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drainagept-10529Sept11.jpg http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drainagept-10629Sept11.jpg In the meantime, this is going on inside! I put up the first temp blind. I’ll update the temporary blinds thread too ~ we couldn’t get Redishades *anywhere*. After A LOT of mucking around, ended up getting what we needed from Shuttters R Us in Sydney ~ great service too. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And this has started to happen ~ sneak peak here minus the ‘beading’/ quads. Love it! Very happy with the colour... (exciting!) :: our Fairhaven Glenair 614Nov 06, 2011 5:07 pm Drainage (cont’d): Our concreter was the most professional, fantastic guy. He was there *every day* because he wanted to supervise the work of the plumber ~ as he said, otherwise his guy was just going to run over the pipes + break them. Logic!! (Just common sense! ~ so rare + so great to experience!) So when he was satisfied it was OK, then all the crushed rock went over the pipes. http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drainagept-20102Oct11.jpg http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drainagept-20202Oct11.jpg In this picture you can see the ‘pit’ in the centre front. They use ‘pits’ like this to readjust levels for the correct fall, where you don’t have a whole lot of room to negotiate fall on a superflat block like ours. Also called a ‘sump pit’. http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drainagept-20302Oct11.jpg http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drainagept-20402Oct11.jpg Now the driveway can actually start! (exciting!) :: our Fairhaven Glenair 615Nov 06, 2011 5:35 pm Driveway: We had detailed discussions with our guy relating to the fall we needed for the channel drains in front of and behind the garage, + on the end of the driveway. Plus the crossovers. We also have done the full 1 metre path all around the house with 30mm fall away from the house (as per those CSIRO guidelines that we *all* get at some point) ~ so that there is no chance of pooling next to the slab, or landscape too close to the house that could cause future problems. Circular driveway ~ due to very limited street parking + ditch out the front, plus x 2 crossovers (would’ve liked some Lilydale topping crushed gravel here, like at least half the houses in our street, but forbidden by our council… go figure ), plus the 1 metre path all around the house… adds up to a lot of concrete. * Out the front, the main part of the driveway + in many ways part of the façade ~ aggregate. * The crossovers ~ already expensive enough with extra reo needed per council specs ~ just plain concrete. Would’ve been nicer in coloured concrete, but never mind. * The path all around the house, coloured concrete, charcoal grey ~ a great match for the house colours. The shape is created. http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drivewaypt-10103Oct11.jpg The pit ended up having to be in the garden bed ~ we’ll work around this somehow! http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drivewaypt-10203Oct11.jpg The reo goes down. http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drivewaypt-20104Oct11.jpg http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drivewaypt-20204Oct11.jpg http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drivewaypt-20304Oct11.jpg http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drivewaypt-20404Oct11.jpg http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy322/vanilla_tree/Drivewaypt-20504Oct11.jpg Carpet: In the meantime, this is happening inside!
