Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 14, 2010 10:27 pm Hi Forum, I am getting my head arund to decide on which option i should go for for my family room lightning?? If i'll go with Option 2, then there will be less light in Meals, If i'llgo with option 1 , then there will be mis alignment between lights And also, can't decide on whether i should go for three pendant lights or not in kitchen???? Hey Forum, please suggest, please also provide a reason for whichever option you will choose --All red lights are halogen --All Blue light will be pendandant Option 1 Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Option 2 Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Regards, Simpson Re: Electric plan - please suggest 2Apr 14, 2010 10:49 pm I think both options are much the same. What will you have instead of the kitchen pendants? Are you sure there are enough halogens to light the space you have? Why can't the sparkie ensure the lights are aligned? Another Q, what sort of home are you having and what kind of decor etc will you have? Do you want to break up certain areas to make it more/less formal rather than downlights everywhere? A very nice pendant etc can do wonders for the home and personally I am not a fan of a whole home being filled with halogens. Regards, Simpson Re: Electric plan - please suggest 4Apr 15, 2010 12:27 am Hi Simpson I do lighting plans all the time, and the general rule for halogen lights is 1.0 metre - 1.2 metres apart. As you have no dimensions on your plan it is hard to comment on how many would be enough. As far as he pendants in the kitchen, you definately need 3. I totally agree with Dollar however, about not having huge amounts of halogens - but I take it you are talking about energy saving halogens for the ones you do use? I prefer to only use halogens for task lighting, and where a very minimal look is required, or for practicality, under eaves etc, where one does not want to clean a fitting. Pendants are great for atmosphere, and much cosier - not so commercial looking. If you want unobtrusive lighting for an area light, say in the kitchen as well as the pendants, you could consider a flush mounted fluoro - don't freak out, they are very smart. Either round or square, with frosted glass over, and flush with the ceiling, giving a great light. Available in warm or white light. If it were my home, I would have 1 pendant in the hallway, and 2 in the living/dining room. 2 pendants in the family room for a traditional scheme, with one in the meals area, and for a contemporary scheme go with plan A (halogens) for family and meals area (if you must, keeping in line but check the distance apart). For kitchen 3 pendants (switched from in the kitchen) and a ceiling mounted fluoro, or 3 halogens as in B Hope this helps Lol Re: Electric plan - please suggest 5Apr 15, 2010 8:43 am simpson If i'll go with Option 2, then there will be less light in Meals, If i'llgo with option 1 , then there will be mis alignment between lights Simpson Living in the new house now for a year I would have to say that more (cheap) lighting is better. Halogens look good but the light they deliver is just not bright enough for me (probably because they are too directional). So I'd rather the lighting that puts as much light into an area as possible. At least with pendants you can put a bright compact fluoro in so I would consider having pendants central in all areas just in case you need some serious lighting. Oh and no one really cares about lighting placement after a while except when they complain they can't see! Re: Electric plan - please suggest 6Apr 15, 2010 10:35 am Do you want halogens over the dining table for example? Or would you prefer a light for more contrast rather than in my eyes "clinical" lighting where the whole home is filled with halogens. These lights etc are just examples what they can do to your home. They are not representations necessary of what I like nor what you may like. You can still use halogens and also lights. http://www.electronichouse.com/images/u ... ronics.jpg http://www.formplusfunction.com/blog/wp ... dining.gif http://www.furniturestoreblog.com/image ... ghting.jpg http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/uimages ... 112108.jpg http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/uimages ... 09_GQ1.jpg http://img.archiexpo.com/images_ae/phot ... -48532.jpg The difference of a dining room with halogens...... http://www.ibacos.com/media/1588/DiningRoom_large.jpg The use of both, my fave.... http://www.housedesignidea.com/wp-conte ... io-Inc.jpg Lighting can make a room. The type of light will make a huge difference. I hope this helps. I am no expert but I think the use of halogens and pendants or whatever you choose can look much more nicer, exquisite and more homely compared to the whole house or whole open/living/kitchen etc being filled with halogens. It's your home so you choose what you what and what suits your needs. Thanks Dollar, Yes, it does make a difference by having different pendant alongwith halogen and yes i'm going for ENergy saving halogens... But can't decide location for LIving/Dining pendant. I 'm thinking for going pendant also in Family, But so does that mean i have to buy same pendant for FAMILY and meals... Thanks, Simpson Re: Electric plan - please suggest 9Apr 18, 2010 10:38 pm No worries Simpson. I am no expert and this is only my idea/thoughts on the situation. To give you an example, our open living/dining and kitchen area all have different lights. Open dining-1 pendant light. Living/lounge area-we have halogens but have a drop roof with a dimmer. Kitchen-1 pendant plus a light that sticks to the roof-like what you would put in the pantry but more classy than that. For the rest of the house we have pendants. Halogen down one hallway and a pendant in the entrance area. Re: Electric plan - please suggest 10Apr 19, 2010 5:15 pm Dollar No worries Simpson. OK I am glad you are veering away from halogens, you will get much more atmosphere and less "clinical look". The pendants in the family and the meals area should definately be the same, and those in the living and dining rooms should ideally be the same as, or matching the hallway, but in a smaller or simpler version. You can either go for a middle of the road classic look, which will go with any scheme, but if your decoration is contemporary, keep the pendants very simple. I hope this helps Lol Re: Electric plan - please suggest 12Apr 25, 2010 8:20 pm Lol Hi Simpson You didn't tell me if the scheme was contemporary or traditional, but you can get pendants that suit either scheme so it does not matter. However, if you decide to go with halogens (especially if you are having a contempary style home) then I suggest that you have them with seperate switches for different banks-that way you can have as many on as you wish at any given time. I've been in houses where they have lots of halogens in a room on at the sametime and it can feel very stark.
