DA approved Waiting on a few more Builder's quotes. Re: tiles in the hallway instead of carpet?? 22Jan 13, 2010 10:39 am I have to say, in general, I agree with Ash - I would never have tiles in my living areas, much too cold and hard, especially with kids. On the other hand, carpet is a complete nightmare, especially under the family meal table, with a 18 mth old who likes to throw food!!! That's why we've gone for solid timber in the family area - not only to I love the look, it's easy to keep clean too and much warmer underfoot than tiles. That's just my preference though - tiles certainly look the goods, that is for sure. Re: tiles in the hallway instead of carpet?? 23Jan 13, 2010 10:58 am royalblue Tiles throughout? I could not live in a place like that! Cold, hard, noisy, unforgiving, and grout a pain to keep clean. Toddlers are learning to get their feet. I recall my kids at that age. Falling over head first onto tiles.... YEEKS!!! Rather have nice soft carpets anyday! Ash. LOL - too late as it's all organised and paid for! My parents are carpet layers, so we've had similar from them. Our last house was wood everywhere and was just so simple to clean. As Pipe mentioned, our house has been designed for it. We're utilising the thermal mass of the slab to heat and cool the house. Carpet, wood, etc are all insulating and would negate the thermal mass properties of the slab - otherwise we would have likely used bamboo everywhere. So for us it was natural stone tiles in a dark colour to soak in the heat (with full shading in summer to keep them cool) or polished concrete throughout. Our builder wouldn't agree to the concrete and making sure that the contractors don't destroy it, so tiles it is. The hard floor and little people has been a big issue for us. We have a 17 month old running around already, and I am concerned about her slipping over and cracking her head on the floor. We will have some carpet rugs down in the bedrooms and lounge area, and we have a playroom for the her which will have the floor lined with rubber mats. Other than that, we just have to be vigilant parents. Fitted/installed carpets are not an option for us as we have cats as well as our child, and want the option to be able to take any rugs out and hose them off in case of accidents, coughed up furballs, etc. No carpet also makes for a very low allergy house depending on what else you do or don't put in there (ie, cats!!!).
