Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 11, 2010 8:15 pm So we've just moved in to our new house and need to get the stormwater done. The plumbers that did the house quoted about $2500 to do it, however there's not much to it and we reckon we'll have a crack ourselves (with the guidance of a few more handy-peoples)... Are there any guides or documents with some good instructions? We're aware it's not just dig-trench-insert-pipe... but something on paper explaining the best way to go about gradients etc would be great! Cheers -Nick Re: DIY Stormwater 2Jan 12, 2010 8:26 am I'm not 100% sure on this, but my plumber said he needs to draw up the design, submit that and get it inspected. You may need a license to do some / all of that...but worth asking the question. At the least you might be able to work with the plumber and do a lot of the digging and labour yourself. That could save you a few $$. Re: DIY Stormwater 3Jan 12, 2010 9:57 am Useful little definitions list from plumbing industry vic as to what constitutes 'plumbing works' and hence what requires a licenced plumber to undertake. http://www.pic.vic.gov.au/www/html/204-what-is-plumbing-work.asp I couldn't say whether any or all of its applicable in SA, but it gives a reasonable overview. May be worth checking with the relevant body in SA before conducting the work yourself, if only for the piece of mind that if it goes pear shaped you should be covered. They also have some technical solution sheets which are useful for building a little background knowledge. http://www.pic.vic.gov.au/www/html/396-technical-solutions-sheets.asp Our Build - Places Fairhaven 23+ - https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=28045 Our Landscaping - Belial's Backyard - https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=45375 Re: DIY Stormwater 4Jan 12, 2010 10:11 am Just curious, where's the stormwater going at the moment? I'm a little surprised you got a certificate of occupancy without it. My knowledge of the requirements is vague and it's probably another of those things that varies from one jurisdiction to another, but what little buddy said about licencing and inspection rings a bell. Re: DIY Stormwater 5Jan 12, 2010 10:26 am Thanks guys - yeah I was reading the Vic licensing thing, waiting to see if it applies here too. Macy - must be different in Canberra too, at the moment we have downpipes but that's it, as far as I am aware there is no requirement for it to be done before occupancy. Re: DIY Stormwater 6Jan 12, 2010 10:47 am Actually I think I once read that you don't even have to have stormwater pipes, you can just let it run off your roof straight onto your garden, as long as it's designed to flow in such a way that it does not cascade onto neighbouring properties. And the other thing they worry about is if it IS connected to the stormwater it's done properly, no mistakes between stormwater (untreated) and sewage (treated). Maybe as little buddy said you can do most of it yourself. Hubby did that with the garden light, the electrician just came at the end to connect the wires, otherwise he would have been here for hours digging. Re: DIY Stormwater 8Jan 12, 2010 1:49 pm hoffdog for $2500 i would just be letting my builder do it and saving myself the work, my builder wanted 5700, so i said no and have found someone else to do it for 3000, save ya back Yeah, I'll probably get a few quotes just to be sure - I think SWMBO wants to have a go at something rather than spending the money... Re: DIY Stormwater 9Jan 12, 2010 2:15 pm My stormwater was drawn on my engineering which was submitted to council. I dont think it would be that hard to do it, but mine is dug down about 600mm, found that out when we broke it with the post hole digger. I also dont think it would be that hard to work out sewage from stormwater, i already had the outlet to the street, and i think sewage is 100mm and stormwater is 90mm. But not 100% Plumbers 'can be' plumbers, made all the worse by self certification which the building surveyor invariably accepts as proof of compliance! The good thing is that you know know. 3 4857 Grab a hose, insert it at the top of the inlet/down pipe and turn the water on and see where the water is escaping from. Then you'll know. 3 8465 in the stormwater pit or the drain? Those dont look like theyd fit in the drain. Separately, the pits do get stuff in them during the course of the build.
