Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 09, 2010 1:09 pm Hi All The is our first big annoyance so far..... We visited the site yesterday to see that the chippie has put installed the stainless handle and lock in our nice big timber front door - in the wrong spot!! We were a bit particular about this, so we even went to the extent of drawing him a clear as day, foolproof diagram of where we wanted he handle to sit. But alas, he has still managed to stuff it up. We even found our diagram screwed up in the dump bin! The handle is one of those long stainless ones and the door is a pivot door style (just without the pivot hinge). The handle. and the locks are too high - about 15-20cm higher. It is so high, that a child would not be able to open the front door! Not to mention that it looks ridiculus. Im going back out there today to take some pictures of it, which ill post up. I think the only way this can be fixed properly is to get a new door. If they try and fill in the holes with filler its going to look stupid when it comes time to stain it. Looks like they will also need to replace the door jam as the lock is in the wrong position as well. I know they are going to try and get out of replacing. What do you think we should do? Should we fight for this one and demand a new door, or is the builder within his rights to refuse replacement? Personally I think the chippie should be the one to cough up for the door...... Re: AHHH! Chippie has put front door handle in wrong spot!! 3Jan 09, 2010 1:19 pm I havent got any at the moment as we went out there last night on the way home and I didnt have the camera. Going back out today so will post then. Re: AHHH! Chippie has put front door handle in wrong spot!! 4Jan 09, 2010 1:25 pm It's shocking that he comletely disregarded your specific instructios. I'd take a photo of the door, as well as the instructions he so kindly placed in the trash and send them to your builder letting them know that you want it fixed - and if that means a new door then so be it. I hope they sort it out property for you Re: AHHH! Chippie has put front door handle in wrong spot!! 5Jan 09, 2010 2:51 pm I'm going to take a stab in the dark here and probably go out on a limb too. If the handle you have chosen is a long one which runs vertically up the door and you requested the lock to go in a normal position. The handle may have been set up centre of the door style, which is what I would have done. Then the lock can only be set a certain distance back from the edge of the door (some where between 60-70mm). The problem may have been that the door handle would have covered the lock mechanism, thus rendering it unusable. I'm certainly not saying that this is correct and if this is what has happened then the chippie should have taken direction form the supervisor before fitting it. Could cost him a new door though. Re: AHHH! Chippie has put front door handle in wrong spot!! 6Jan 09, 2010 2:55 pm I'd definitely raise it. I'd probably ask if there was a reason why the carpenter had to do it that way because you asked for it a different way. Then if there is no good reason...which is what you want them to say...then go from there. Re: AHHH! Chippie has put front door handle in wrong spot!! 7Jan 09, 2010 3:43 pm My internal door was installed as my front door, and my front door was installed as my garage access door. As I too have the long front door handle, I got a brand new door, not the filled one. Hopefully your builder will do the same. Re: AHHH! Chippie has put front door handle in wrong spot!! 8Jan 10, 2010 3:16 pm Well we went to the house last night, took some photos and wrote a note for them and stuck it under the door.
Got a call first thing this morning. Turns out they are working today (yes a sunday). So we drove out to the house and spoke to him face to face. It tuns out that what has happenned is that we have a deadlock as well as a mortice lock to go onto the door below the handle. We had measured this, but our clearances were not enough. So he says that he has had to put it higher. We fiddled around with measurements and configurations for a while and in the end he has talked us into leaving it as the locks would have to be much lower than what we originally thought they would be. So after all that, we have decided to leave it! Oh well. Well put it down to a learning experience! He seems to think that the spot he has it in is the "normal" position that is done on all these doors anyway. He was actually really good about it all, and said straight up that he would replace the door if we want. While we were there we went through some other stuff with him and he gave us some insight about the electrician, painters and tilers that are coming shortly!! Here is a pic so you can see what i was talking about. http://img16.imageshack.us/i/img04552.jpg/ Re: AHHH! Chippie has put front door handle in wrong spot!! 9Jan 10, 2010 3:19 pm Sounds like our door will be the same as yours. It's a 1200mm pivot door, with the long Gainsborough handle, plus the lock, and the dead lock. I hope they dont put it up too high on ours either! Re: AHHH! Chippie has put front door handle in wrong spot!! 10Jan 10, 2010 3:23 pm Well that's good news in a way. Good that they were able to explain it and you were happy with the explanation. Nice that they were happy to replace the door if you had wanted it as well. Where's the picture! Re: AHHH! Chippie has put front door handle in wrong spot!! 11Jan 10, 2010 3:30 pm Most people really do try to do the same thing, and I've noticed a tendency for people on forums to develop a kind of "victimised herd mentality" where, in the absence of both sides of the story, it usually paints the company/builder/employer/tradie as the baddie. Us females are VERY good at herding together and comforting each other by fostering a "poor us vs. evil them" mentality! It's good to give the benefit of the doubt Not to tread on any toes, we all do this, but I thought it a prudent time to remind people It helps to keep stress down Get some long brass machine screws and bolt right through the gate and put brass acorn nuts and washers on the other side. It will never come off 1 9074 Black on light wood does look good. Not sure if it will be as long lasting as a steel finish? 6 6349 6 4346 |
