Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 26, 2007 10:00 am Hi Guys,
I am thinking to do garage remote control myslef. PD charges for this $711. I think I could do it cheaper. What are your thoughts? Do I need extra powerpoint to garage ceiling? Is it possible at all to install RC after handover? Thanks, Anton Re: Garage remote control 2Jul 26, 2007 11:01 am If this includes the power point, the unit and the installation, then its a good price. A sparkie will cost your $100 minimum for th power point, the power unit posdsibly $300-400, plus the brakets for the unit. also depends on whether it is a roller door ot panel lift.
I would get PD to do it. Just my thoughts. Adrian B Re: Garage remote control 3Jul 26, 2007 11:03 am Yes - you will need a powerpoint in the ceiling.
We paid $600 6 yrs ago for a B&D RC motor installed on a tilt a door in an apartment block (those mesh garage doors) - so $711 doesn't sound too overpriced. We had this installed after we purchased the unit - wasn't any hassle. Make sure this price includes 2 controllers - sometimes they'll try and charge you an extra $50 per controller. Re: Garage remote control 6Jul 26, 2007 2:08 pm penjay Porter Davis supply 3 controllers with their doors. Two keyring controls (mine is gorgeous pink!) and one that can hang up somewhere. ooh, I want a coloured one! Our Adenbrook home was completed in September. Re: Garage remote control 7Jul 26, 2007 2:33 pm Thank you all!
I think it's better to do it with PD. There is not much saving. I was surprised with the fact that PD do not put brickwork above garage. For this they charge $1295. What do you think about it? Thanks, Anton Re: Garage remote control 9Jul 26, 2007 2:45 pm It's a common way for builders to cust cost by filling the area above garage door with something in timber/wood. I have seen quite a lot of houses built that way.
I guess structurlly shouldn't make much difference, personally still don't like something in timber/wood to be exposed to rain/water. That doesn't look good! We have brick work above the garage door. Re: Garage remote control 10Jul 26, 2007 2:49 pm We'll be getting brickwork above the garage too. Looks so much better. Re: Garage remote control 12Jul 26, 2007 3:25 pm We have brickwork above our garage as standard and get 3 remotes (2 on keyrings and one wall mounted) inculded with our door which was standard for the house we bought Re: Garage remote control 13Jul 26, 2007 3:30 pm We have brickwork above our garage as standard and get 3 remotes (2 on keyrings and one wall mounted) inculded with our door which was standard for the house we bought Re: Garage remote control 15Jul 26, 2007 7:04 pm Since I got my panel lift doors & openers (retro-fit into an existing house) I've been paying attention to them a lot.
A neighbour had the weatherboards above the garage door (they didn't brick across it) and when his door was made, they made a matching panel that is fitted over the boards & matches nicely. Re: Garage remote control 16Jul 26, 2007 10:07 pm As far as i know getting the garage doors automated later on ends up having a hole in the area of the door 'opener' which doesnt look good. get it done right at the start. Big M is charging us 7-800 approx... I must ask with how many remotes and if i get a pink or a purple one!!!!!! Re: Garage remote control 18Jul 27, 2007 10:49 pm On the subject of doors... most builders offer a Panel Lift as an upgrade.
Do people choose them purely for looks? Any other benefits to them? From my point of view, they take up more space in the garage (I'm 6'4" and need to duck under the damn things). I do like the look though. Re: Garage remote control 19Jul 27, 2007 10:57 pm perryr (I'm 6'4" and need to duck under the damn things). Perry, Take off the KISS boots....
