Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 04, 2010 11:26 pm There has been similar threads on here re: the height of windows and doors in relation to 9" ceilings and so on. I cannot however find a thread relating to height of alfresco doors in relation to window height. My question is: shouldn't alfresco door heights match the height of the windows nearby instead of them having the "uneven" look. Re: Window and door height 2Jan 04, 2010 11:30 pm Depends on the type of doors. We have two sets of bifolds opening onto our al fresco room, which are different heights - that's because of the internal ceiling heights. One is in the family room with 9' ceilings and the other opens off the lounge, under the high point of a raked ceiling.... I don't know if either matches the window height....must check that when it's light. But it's never struck me as odd-looking, so I guess it's OK. Re: Window and door height 3Jan 04, 2010 11:34 pm It's just that all the houses we have seen the alfresco doors are level with the window height whether they are bi-folds/sliding. Re: Window and door height 4Jan 04, 2010 11:34 pm Hmm. . . I think it depends on how many windows and doors you have at the back of your house. .. We've got the master bed window, living room stacker doors, kitchen window, 3x dining room windows, laundry window, bathroom window and back bedroom window, and I think that they're at about 4 different heights. . . looks. . . interesting??? It's the back of the house. . . who cares? Re: Window and door height 5Jan 04, 2010 11:41 pm I'm too lazy to get up, go turn the lights on and look, but here's a photo : http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i18/kerrynw/IMG_4707_1_1.jpg It's a bit dim and far away, but you can see the bifolds directly ahead are taller than the ones on the right. Looks like the shorter set match window heights though.... I should be in bed (couldn't sleep ). Re: Window and door height 6Jan 05, 2010 8:18 am when we had our new homme drawn up, I had the 4 panel sliding door higher than usual at 28c (2.4m) high. Because I am quite a tall guy (6foot4) When the drawings came through, I realised that the 2 windows in the same room (family) were only 25c (2.1m) high. Now i am not sure how it would have looked in the real world, or if anyone would have noticed, but I had the windows changed to 2.7m high to match the sliding door height. Re: Window and door height 7Jan 05, 2010 8:29 am Hi Dollar Our stacker doors are much lower than our windows. When I look around the room, the other window is also a different height to the main windows at the back of the house. Dosent make a difference at all Mrs B Re: Window and door height 8Jan 05, 2010 8:32 am Just checked properly and yes, the 4-panel bifolds and the French doors are the same height as the three windows in that area. It's only the 3-panel bifolds that are taller. I think they look OK because theyr'e centred.... Re: Window and door height 9Jan 06, 2010 4:28 pm Hi Unless there is a specific design reason for the head heights not to align, they should align. Mostly full height windows sit on the bottom plate and are therefore 40mm shorter than the doors which sit on the slab (brick veneer). That way they all line up at the head. I think it's about a brick in difference so nothing major and probably something no one else will notice. Re: Window and door height 11Jan 07, 2010 8:13 pm Common joinery height is 2150 but this also depends on the aesthetic appearance, some people place 600mm high windows and seating level you will also get different height is you mix timber and aluminium this is why most front and laundry doors are at a different height to the rest. Unless you are obviously adjusting height for aesthetics, try and place windows at uniform height or it will look wrong and give you more headaches with brick work and lining up architraves. i imagine you also have another contract with an architect? and yeah, whatever other's said about special conditions and appendices 16 16026 I have been looking into getting quotes for a reno I am doing shortly.
