Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 03, 2010 7:29 pm We are building on a corner block and still considering our options for front part of the property (half front and side street) which will be elevated (anywhere between 80cm to 1m) and require a retaining wall. I have seen some display homes which have a brick retaining wall out the front, which matches the brick of the house. Question (and yes, they are probably very naive) * do we need a permit to build a retaining wall? * how do we go about it? ie: do we need to get a plan drawn up and them employ a brickie to do the work? * does anyone know the approx. cost for approx. 19m (side) + 15m at front We are also thinking of having brick steps up the front porch made of same brick. I'm hoping to keep any leftover bricks from the build. Should I discuss with builder and see how much it would be order an extra pallet? Any suggestions/opinions/advice would be appreciated. Re: Brick retaining wall at front of property? 2Jan 03, 2010 7:38 pm Attached is a photo of a house a few doors away which is also on a corner. It shows the approximate height of the fill. http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab307/Rowena50/IMG_0194.jpg Attached is a photo of a Bentley display home which has a brick retaining wall. http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab307/Rowena50/IMG_0197.jpg Re: Brick retaining wall at front of property? 3Jan 03, 2010 9:23 pm we had a brick retaining wall at the back of our last property to match the house. Luckily we knew a good bricklayer and got the work done for an excellent price. However this time we have built on a corner block and have retaining walls along one side and out the front. Eventually we will also need a retaining wall along the other length of the house as well. this time we've gone for large limestone wall blocks. these however need to be done by someone with the right tools. Our nearest neighbours however used a smaller sized block and did their wall themselves in a reconstituted limestone. it really depends on your house brick colour. we went this way because a) our bricks we a limestone colour b0 it was the most cost efficient. but you also need to consider what the height limit is with your local council if you keep under 1 m, 1200mmm or 900mm depending on council you might not need council approval. different councils have different high limits. Thanks for the info. I might have a word to our bricklayers. Can I ask how much it cost you (ball park figure)? Re: Brick retaining wall at front of property? 5Jan 04, 2010 1:41 am brick retaining we are talking 19 years ago and it was around 1k for a house width plus patio are width wall of approx 700-100mm tall. our current retaining wall ( limestone blocks) worked out at $53-$55 a block including supply and install. blocks are 1m in length by 350 mm. the first wall is 2 blocks high and was 26 blocks long it worked out to $3300 The 2nd wall is 17 blocks worth at $55 each it's partly 2 blocks high and then drops down to one block high. Our guy also did some bobcat work to get everything level and level off afterwards. worked out at just under 1k Re: Brick retaining wall at front of property? 6Jan 04, 2010 9:10 am kexkez brick retaining we are talking 19 years ago and it was around 1k for a house width plus patio are width wall of approx 700-100mm tall. our current retaining wall ( limestone blocks) worked out at $53-$55 a block including supply and install. blocks are 1m in length by 350 mm. the first wall is 2 blocks high and was 26 blocks long it worked out to $3300 The 2nd wall is 17 blocks worth at $55 each it's partly 2 blocks high and then drops down to one block high. Limestone might be a better look. Re: Brick retaining wall at front of property? 7Jan 04, 2010 11:02 am oh he quoted us 3600 to do the other side of the house too ( about the same length with several direction changes) . that's a little more difficult for access because we have some trees right near where we want part of the wall andit includes one set of steps. it will also be 2 blocks high. Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that. Have a good day 4 5193 Thanks for the insights, that makes perfect sense, and yeah, I will be leaning on the experience of the excavator operator entirely. 6 16149 Hi All, I engaged a tradie to install concrete retaining wall 600-800mm high over 32 meters in Victoria. Sleepers are 200*75*2000 mm installed over 17 steel posts. I… 0 6917 |
