Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 22, 2009 8:24 am Hi All, I am currently building a customised home with my partner, the problem we are experiencing at the moment is, the builder had initially promised us the agreed sqm would be calculated internally and would not include the bricks however, they have now come back and informed us, our house (mind you they have already submitted to council!) t hat house floor area is calculated including the bricks. Can someone please tell me if this is correct and if all builders calculate their house area this way (calculate house area with bricks)? Thanks all in advance for your responses. Being a cynical bugger I would assume that builders would calculate squarage (sp?) on any basis that would maximise the number to make it look as big as possible and therefore would assume it's from outside of brick wall to outside of brick wall. In my opinion the issue really is not the method of calculation but the change in tack by the builder, and whether this points to future behavior. Do you have the initial agreement/understanding in writing/email? If you don't then it becomes a you said/we said argument....if you lose this one then at least you know now to document everything that is said. If something is said verbally confirm with an email or other written correspondence. Hope this helps...good luck.
