Floorboards and Kitchen Cupboards

Hi all, Just wondering what colour laminate cupboards match floorboards. I was thinking of having a wood grain look cupboard with gloss hardwood boards. Any ideas?

Stevec, we had woodgrain laminate cupboards over a timber floor in a previous house, and I felt it was too much "timber look" and detracted from the visual impact of the floor boards. I would suggest something in the brown category, (is that the earthy tones!) but almost anything within reason will go with timber floors. Have a look at some display homes in your area for ideas.

I would also suggest you go with a satin finish for the floor. High gloss finishes will show every mark and very speck of dust and will eventually dull in high traffic areas. A satin finish is much more forgiving.

I think anything would go with wooden floors. It's a matter of co-ordinating the whole house together. But I agree with shanem. Too much wood will look too heavy and detract whatever impact you are trying to make with the wood wether it be with the floors or the cupboards.

We were originally going to have wood grain cupboards, timber plantation shutters and wooden flooring. We skipped on the wooden flooring as we would've probably felt like we were living amongst trees with all that wood around! And wooden furniture, too! :lol:

I'm a big fan of neutrals and earthy tones. I think they work well with woodgrain stuff. And it's hard to go wrong with these kinds of colours.

We are also using timber floors (spotted gum or brushbox) in our new build with a white gloss kitchen, pale composite stone benchtop and greenish splashback. We have a timber dining suite and chocolate brown lounge and I agree ... a lot of wood can be overpowering. We love neutral and natural shades but moderation is the key.

We had jarrah floors, timber furniture and blinds in our last house and I felt it was a bit dark. This time 'round I will be going for contrasting shades i.e. dark/light and different textures to add some difference.

If your Spotted Gum comes out of Queensland it can also be very dark. Specify NSW spotty if you want a lighter look.
You must have plenty of dough if your even looking at brushbox :wink:

thanks for the tip on the NSW spotted gum. The wood we have seen comes from WA mills but I'm not sure where it is grown so I will check with the supplier (we were led to believe it is grown locally but who knows). We saw samples of the spotted gum and it had a lot of variation in the wood but was generally fairly light in colour.

The other wood we liked was Marri but there was a lot of variation in the colour (perhaps too much - it would be a real feature). Brushbox didn't appear to be much dearer - around $8. per square metre more than spotted gum. Or maybe that is linear mtre
