Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 17, 2009 12:41 pm We are so close to contract signing and just tidying things up. I love the simplicity of a standard facade, and this is why I have chosen standard. I really hate them though with no eaves. I have tried to 'cover' this though by upgarding to eaves, but only to the FRONT of the home but not the garage. So over the front bedroom windows and portico. We were told this is what a lot of people do, and I have seen it on a few homes, where the eaves kind of wrap around the side then dissapear about a metre in. It would cost us thousands to have eaves all the way around, and I just dont know if its worth it What are your opinions on the 'part eaves' ?? Re: Adding 'some' eaves??/ Opinions please 2Dec 17, 2009 12:49 pm Personally I am an "all or nothing" type person. I also love eaves so would never not have them. However there are a lot of people who don't like eaves - like everything it is personal choice. Do you have a drawing / sketch of your facade? Might make it easier for visualisation. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Adding 'some' eaves??/ Opinions please 3Dec 17, 2009 12:55 pm I love eaves on the right house. I do love them but our house isn't the house for eaves. I've seen eaves on newly built houses and it doesn't look right sometimes. Re: Adding 'some' eaves??/ Opinions please 4Dec 17, 2009 1:32 pm I agree - it's an all or nothing type thing. Our house has it - it's a plantation style. In fact we've paid extra to extend them even further out. On top of that, the developer has mandated that all homes have eaves to a certain length on all homes build in the neighborhood. On top of the look alone, they're helpful in controlling solar heat and light. Stefan Building the M3tr!con Liberty 42 at Stonecutters Ridge. The New Build Blog - "Life, In Progress." Could you just put them on one side and not the Garage side? I asked our builder to put eaves on the house plans we are looking at and he asked me why. My reasons were to keep the house cooler and some sun out and he told me that they don't make a difference for that..... is this true? Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=32574 Re: Adding 'some' eaves??/ Opinions please 6Dec 17, 2009 2:44 pm To fit our last house on the block we had to delete the eaves either side. While it was exactly what I wanted, it still looked fine... Having them go down the sides for a bit and finish in a less conspicuous place would have been better still! You can kind of see this in the photo http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac304/ms_builder/105734814al1251689896.jpg Hope that helps a little Re: Adding 'some' eaves??/ Opinions please 7Dec 17, 2009 2:44 pm To fit our last house on the block we had to delete the eaves either side. It wasnt exactly what I wanted, but it still looked ok... that is what I meant to say, sorry about the double post Re: Adding 'some' eaves??/ Opinions please 9Dec 17, 2009 3:31 pm Eaves or no eaves is exactly the same price with my builder. Re: Adding 'some' eaves??/ Opinions please 10Dec 17, 2009 3:58 pm I reckon a house looks wimpy without eaves... as another poster said a while back 'boxes with tin hats'! Re: Adding 'some' eaves??/ Opinions please 11Dec 17, 2009 4:34 pm joeygbh I reckon a house looks wimpy without eaves... as another poster said a while back 'boxes with tin hats'! I agree. While we don't technically need eaves on the garage, the developer requires them, and personally I think it looks better having eaves all around. Maybe I'm just used to it, as all the houses I've lived in have been built this way, but I think a house without eaves does in fact, "look like a box with a tin hat". Stonecutters Ridge Community Website | My photos Re: Adding 'some' eaves??/ Opinions please 12Dec 17, 2009 5:05 pm I also agree it's an all or nothing thing too. And my vote is for eaves! We extended ours from the standard 300mm with the facade to 450mm. The only place they are not on is the side of the garage where it is on the boundary. I don't care if they don't 'do' anything (except keep the rain from coming in an open window and help provide shade in Summer), they look heaps better on my style house! I believe it would look unfinished if they were to stop 1 metre around the sides from the front. You wouldn't want to have the house built and then not like the sides and back with no eaves if the front does....that would be very costly! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Cheers Lou http://take2-customdesigndownslope.blogspot.com 07-10-09 omg they have cut the block 14-05-10 we finally have the keys Re: Adding 'some' eaves??/ Opinions please 14Dec 17, 2009 10:12 pm We were disappointed to find out the design of house we had chosen didn't come with a facade that included eaves. We have always shunned houses that don't have eaves and are box like. We were quoted $11k for eaves or verandah to whole house. Now we have no choice we will make up for it by choosing the colour bricks carefully and having a great front garden Re: Adding 'some' eaves??/ Opinions please 15Dec 17, 2009 10:20 pm I actually thought I'd be ok with no eaves to our bedroom and garage but I have to admit I actually cringe when I come round the corner and see our bedroom without them although the garage bit doesn't bother me. otherwise I love our house. I just wish I'd insisted on eaves being added for the main bedroom ( at the front of the house) Re: Adding 'some' eaves??/ Opinions please 16Dec 17, 2009 10:48 pm Some people like them, some people don't. End of story. What's your climate like? Which way does your house face? Would your design look better with them? Do you need them for climate control? Do YOU like them? ....these are the important questions. Who cares what anyone else thinks/likes/dislikes? You have to live in the house, so make it suit you.
