Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 20, 2007 12:27 pm I intend on having black or a dark shade terracota roof tiles installed on our house when we build, are they better with regard to insulation and longetivity?
Our plan is to install a couple of domestic whirly birds to release the hot air in the roof space in summer preventing the hot air from leaching down in the upstairs "bedroom areas". I'd ensure they are fitted with some kind of lever to prevent them from spinning in the cooler months allowing for the roof to heatup naturally. Now here's where i suspect the catch 22 is? Would i then be best to go easy on the insulation in the roof space allowing for the sun to assist with heating in the cooler months? or Insulate the roof space as best as i can trapping in the artificial heat / chill from the heater and airconditioner? We will be installing reverse cycle heating and cooling prefferable refrigerated as well. Re: Whirly birds and roof space insulation questions? 2Jul 20, 2007 1:11 pm milt,
This topic has recently been discussed (I think the thread was called roof colour in the thermal equation or similar). My suggestion is; 1) Heavily insulate the ceiling 2) Put a ceiling fan in that can draw the warm air into the house during winter. Ideally it should be blocked in winter nights and summer. As you've already said, lock the whirly bird in winter and let it operate in summer. This way the roof acts as a large solar collector that you only tap into in winter. With the ceiling insulation it also means that you don't loose the efforts of your air-conditioning unit. Cheers, Casa Joe Apologies for the delay in getting back to you.
