Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 14, 2009 1:52 pm I am wondering if you guys think you will actually kinda miss the building process once everything is all done, or will you just be so happy to see the end of it? Now that I am nearing the end of my build (nothing really new to see anymore), in a funny way, I think I might actually miss it - watching something grow and take shape. For all the stress and frustration that building causes, it also does bring some joy with it. Seeing progress, seeing the colours you chose. Does anyone else feel this way? Would your experience building a home deter you from doing it again, or would you always build? I would definitely build again. I don't think I would ever be happy with an established home. Just curious. Will you ever build again? 2Dec 14, 2009 2:06 pm Yep I am the same as you... We built our first home about two years ago (to years ago was when we moved in). Even though we had troubles getting the builder to fix things, and things were starting to go wrong - we have sold that house and are now building again. I am the same in that I dont think I would buy established but you just dont know what the future holds. We are now building our dream home in our dream location but because we left our first house so quickly we are wondering how long we will be satisfied with this house (there are always things you would love but cant afford to include arent there). My cousins live in the same estate and they love coming to see our progress, they reckon they had a better time during the build than now living in the house. I guess they are living through us for now, but then what?! Re: will you / do you miss building? Will you ever build again? 3Dec 14, 2009 2:11 pm We haven't started our build yet, but I've really enjoyed the process so far! It is very addictive. At this stage I would say I would build again. There are also other advantages, such as you always sell for way more than you built it for, plus you know the history of the house - no nasty surprises. Even though our land hasn't even been scraped yet, I've really enjoyed following other people's builds and sharing in their excitement. Re: will you / do you miss building? Will you ever build again? 4Dec 14, 2009 2:18 pm We've really enjoyed the process so far too The most stressful part was the finance... we were approved around the time the bank's lending criterias changed... I think had we waited any longer we wouldn't have been approved and our dream wouldn't be happening. There's been a few little moments where we've gone crazy... but as the build progresses... we find that issues bother us less and less. We spent months looking at our plans... then seeing it all become 3 dimensional was amazing. We're at the block every single day... sometimes twice a day. Aaron has done some of his own work during the frame stage, adding in extra plumbing etc. Our SS has been really great. We'd definately build again... but... the idea is to stay where we are for a long time. Might be too attached to our house to want to move! Re: will you / do you miss building? Will you ever build again? 5Dec 14, 2009 2:21 pm It's probably just my age but I'm glad it's over and probably won't be doing it again. It's nice to relax and just enjoy not having to think about it all, we were at the block every day......I was on my mobile first thing in the morning.....walking from the car to work...at work on and off...from work to the car and at night, this was most days I do not miss it Re: will you / do you miss building? Will you ever build again? 6Dec 14, 2009 3:37 pm We won't be building again, as we've found the perfect location & this area is difficult to get into. Having said that, I would love to get things right. As this was the 1st time we built, we made lots of mistakes. I now know what I would have done differently. My biggest change though, would be to NEVER again build with a volume builder ! Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: will you / do you miss building? Will you ever build again? 7Dec 14, 2009 5:36 pm Build again? I think not! Anyway, a year later and we're still busy getting things done. Sometimes I feel like we'll never be finished. I do sometimes think about the perfect house for the next stage in our lives (when the kids finally do the right thing and MOVE OUT), but I doubt we'll be building. Our marriage may not survive a second round. That perfect house better be out there somewhere.... Re: will you / do you miss building? I've had the same experience pretty much except I've now finished building. My finance approval was EXTREMELY stressful and took 8 weeks to get done and not until the day I got the money for the land did that stress end. Once the build started I had a pretty stress free event but it was still a massive emotional roller coaster. I shouldn't have similar finance stress again now that I finally own a house. I think I would build again though 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' Will you ever build again? 9Dec 14, 2009 6:22 pm This is our 3rd build, and it's not something I particularly felt like doing again, but we relocated towns and everything we looked at to buy in our price range, we just wanted to gut and start again, so we are building our family home and staying put. Although, DH has other ideas, and thinks we'll get a couple of acre's and do it again... He can keep thinking that all he wants, but I won't be going anywhere lol. (I should save this post incase we are doing it again in 5 years ) Re: will you / do you miss building? Will you ever build again? 11Dec 14, 2009 8:59 pm Well, we are going to build next year for the 4th time. Trying to downsize this time but really only losing 1 room. Going from 32sq to 28.5sq. At least it will be a little bit smaller. 1st build was an 11.5 sq no garage or carport. Just basic 3 bed, kitchen/meals and lounge. Next came 16.5sq. Again no garage or carport but yipee, it had 3 beds, study, lounge dining, family/meals/kitchen. Gosh it seemed so big. Till the boys got older and needed more space for their own computers etc. So next is our current house, 4 bed, study, rumpas and the other essential rooms, but now one son is moving on to his own house next year so we thought take this oportunity to downsize. Trouble is we still want a spare room, study and I want a sewing room. So still will be 4 bed, study, and only 2 living areas. I think the next step after this will be a retirement home/village. Haha A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. Melbourne West Our build viewtopic.php?f=31&t=34169 Landscaping viewtopic.php?f=19&t=51147 Re: will you / do you miss building? Will you ever build again? 12Dec 14, 2009 10:07 pm Being a first-home buyer, I was initially very excited about the prospect of building a new house. The thought of choosing the design, colours and finishes was terrific, as it would allow me to customise the house the way I wanted... it would truly be MINE. The reality of building a house has been very different however. Maybe it's just my builder, but it's been constant stress and anxiety, arguments, delays, and quality issues. So my next purchase will definitely be an established property. I don't think I'm cut out for this building caper Re: will you / do you miss building? Will you ever build again? 13Dec 14, 2009 10:08 pm Yes, I can't wait to do it again. I think the scariest thing for me was the unknown, now I know how the whole process works I have so much more confidence. Re: will you / do you miss building? Will you ever build again? 14Dec 14, 2009 10:30 pm Its our second build, so the first time did put us off, I enjoyed the process of choosing everything. We built a project home first time around we took a step further this time and designed the house we are building now, so we have had a say in just about everything. Would we build again probably when we are ready to down size we are looking forward to spending a longtime in this home as we have invested so much into it we want to enjoy it. It like having kids for some reason you go and have another one..... Will you ever build again? 15Dec 14, 2009 11:22 pm I am LOVING the building process!! The most stressful part was the finance, as once that was all done and sorted its been smooth sailing!!! I'd definately build again in the future but not for about ten years maybe!!! viewtopic.php?f=31&t=22766 - my build thread! Time waits for no man. Unless that man is Chuck Norris. Re: will you / do you miss building? Will you ever build again? 16Dec 14, 2009 11:54 pm Cant say I will miss my build, will be so glad when its finally over and can have that long awaited champayne on the balcony!! I started this whole saga in January 08, when I bought my land but I had delay with the land settlement. I was so excited when I finally got to site start in mid January 09. I really enjoyed watching the frame go up but the delays started with the bricks and have pretty much continued since, my build has turned into the most drawnout stressful experience of my life and its still going, I have no emotion left........finally got advised today that handover will be next week. OMG if I had to build again it will be a pine box I am never moving again!! Re: will you / do you miss building? Will you ever build again? 17Dec 15, 2009 12:45 am We're moving in next week, and I am confident in saying I will never build again! Loved the process, and would only make minor changes if I could do it over again, happy with our builder too. Main reason is we love our block, and made our house big enough for the next 20 years. Perhaps when the kids have left home (they are only 3 and 18m) we will build something smaller.... Re: will you / do you miss building? Will you ever build again? 18Dec 15, 2009 7:59 am It was all a bit stressful and did put alot of strain. But i have to say I would build again as the second time round probably would be easier as we would know what to do and what was to happen next. Re: will you / do you miss building? Will you ever build again? 19Dec 15, 2009 8:34 am I will certainly build in the future if the circumstances allowed it and we could build what we wanted without having to be as conscious of $$$ For me it has not really been stressful at all, the build has been very quick! The most stressful thing was jumping through hoops for the bank to get the finance sorted in the first instance, then having to wait 5 months to see anything happen at the site... But compared to some stories that is a breeze, so I am very fortunate Building the 'Glenunga' with Statesman Homes Released to Construction: 10/07/2009 Frame/Guttering Done: 21/08/2009 Bricking Finished: 11/09/2009 Painting and second fix plumbing completed 16/11/2009 ... Seems most of us would build again. I think definitely knowing what to expect and what comes next would take a lot of the stress out of it. For me, the most stressful thing has been when a deadline is approaching. My land settlend 2-3 months late and so I just missed out on having my slab completed within the 26 weeks required for the $26k. I ended up getting it after I appealed but those weeks leading up to that 26 week deadline were the most stressful I have experienced. I was over budget as it was and facing the very real possibility that I would need to find an extra $14k somewhere!! The only other time is lately where I was panicing about being in by Christmas but now it seems obvious to me that everything will be fine so I am just really excited now, more than anything.
