Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 11, 2009 5:53 pm Would you mind if people you didnt know where walking through your house at say frame stage? What about later stages? There is a house a bit ahead of ours about three blocks down and my partner would love to look inside but im not too sure. I dont know what I would say if the owner turned up while we were there! I dont think I would really mind, I know that people who are building their own house find it really interesting as i do. My cousins also pop in and see ours when they can as they live in the same estate. i kind of like having another couple of sets of eyes keeping a look out for us! So what do you think?? Re: Is it ok for someone to walk through your house? 2Dec 11, 2009 5:58 pm I walked through our neighbours, and the nieghbour next to there house. With the house two doors down from us, the owner pulled up whilst my brother and I were inside My brother looked like he was going to die I introduced myself and he said that aslong as I didnt break anything it was alright We got to talking a bit too, so it was good. I don't care who walked through our house while it was under construction, as long as they were only looking. Besides, I can't resist a walk-through whenever I pass by a new house myself. I wouldn't mind if I caught someone going through our house, I would ask them what they think! If I see people going through the neighbours houses I stop and ask them if it is there house, hoping to meet my neighbours, but no luck yet! All total strangers! The best one yet was some young guys who said they where studying at Uni and had come to take photos and measurements for part of there coursework! Re: Is it ok for someone to walk through your house? 7Dec 11, 2009 8:48 pm We walked through our neighbours house before they moved in... and I'm sure they walk through ours now. We've had a sticky beak at most the houses on our street and the street behind... felt a little wrong... but we were curious I dont mind neighbours walking through ours... but kids and crims Re: Is it ok for someone to walk through your house? 8Dec 11, 2009 9:43 pm We all do it, curiosity gets the better of us all, I don't have a problem with people walking through my build as I know its going to happen esp around us where it is mostly custom builds on difficult blocks so everyone wants to see what people are doing with there build. I have caught one couple(who live in the next street) we just said hello told them we where the owners and had a chat, Great way to meet the neighbours also if you have not found a builder a good way to check the quality of the build that how we found ours. Cheers Lou http://take2-customdesigndownslope.blogspot.com 07-10-09 omg they have cut the block 14-05-10 we finally have the keys Re: Is it ok for someone to walk through your house? 9Dec 12, 2009 9:50 am I'm the exact opposite. Would not do it and would not be happy for anyone to do it to our place. But in saying that we are in an established area - all the surrounding homes are at least 50yrs old. Plus our home is right down the back of the block - so approx 80m from the roadway - but it drove us insane to see people walk down and go through the place before we sacked the builder and finally locked it up. However all that did was make people walk down the side where the drain was and stop and try to get a look that way. Some things are worth waiting for. I've gone up the windows and looked through, but never ventured inside. It just doesn't feel right. If anything was broken/stolen, you might be blamed for something that you didn't do, plus, it really is trespassing. Re: Is it ok for someone to walk through your house? 11Dec 12, 2009 11:11 am Look and don't touch, great way to get ideas. I see no problem with it Re: Is it ok for someone to walk through your house? 12Dec 12, 2009 11:23 am As long as they respect that it is someone elses home and not theirs and leave it the way they found it, then I don't see the problem. We've had people walk in during construction whilst we are there and they haven't even thought about asking to have a look but just walked in anyway-I find that very rude. We have also had people walk up and turn around after seeing us inside during bricking stage. They only needed to ask if they could have a look. Unless there is a fence around the house it's probably the only thing that will keep people out, even then though people will probably still find a way to get in and have a look. Once the temp fence was removed and about 2 weeks before handover I caught a neighbours visitor parked in our 'driveway', and I was furious! We drove off, returned about 30 minutes later and they had gone...SPRUNG! Whose to say we weren't about to move in and have the driveway poured? That was just wrong... Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I think most people really are just interested in construction once they are building their own house and not being snoopy at all. I wouldnt mind if someone walked through ours (as long as they did no damage) but why does it feel so naughty if you do it then?! I feel like a highschool student wagging school or something I would hate to walk through someone's house to find they hated it and you had to live next to those people for a lonnnng time. Re: Is it ok for someone to walk through your house? 15Dec 12, 2009 1:45 pm yeah, I did it with my neighbour's houses and I wouldn't have cared if others walked through mine, so long as they did no damage, but if just looking, that's cool with me. They finished their build just as ours started and we had a little peek and I wouldnt mind if they looked at ours especially as we just got stuff stolen out of our house, they are keepign an eye out for us and we are very thankful. But in saying that we are in an established area - all the surrounding homes are at least 50yrs old. Ditto on both counts. We will also be building in an older area soon and I don't want anyone poking about. I think since we have double brick in WA as well, it would be easier for someone to get up to something and be out of site. I am even planning to hire a temporary fence like -this- to stop people wandering around but also to secure any deliveries onsite during the build (bricks, window frames etc). Hopefully the ex-cop living over the road will also keep an eye out... Built with Sw1tch H0mes >Build thread< House status 15/12: Gates and A/C finally installed! I didn't like it and I wouldn't do it and he could see that on my face Re: Is it ok for someone to walk through your house? 19Dec 12, 2009 9:11 pm We're building in a brand new estate, and long before we bought our block of land we would walk through people's houses getting ideas and giving our opinion on how they did with their brick/roof/window frame colour schemes and how their plan looked etc! We would only walk through at the end of the day when there was no-one around when we were walking the dog, and I'm sure people have walked through ours - like all the other posters say, as long as they mind their p's and q's and leave our stuff alone then I don't see the problem.
