Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 09, 2009 9:39 pm Has anyone NOT had their their skirting boards painted? For those who HAVE had theirs painted, were they MDF or proper wood? Do you think it is a waist paying for proper wood and then painting it white? Re: Skirting boards... 3Dec 09, 2009 11:04 pm the question is unclear, MDF and Pine are generally used for skirting and architraives, MDF is considered sub-standard to pine, Both are meant to be painted as they cannot be stained,(pine can be with poor results) and are manufactured in a way....to be painted. Why would you not paint them ? ,The reason mdf is used is because its cheaper, and is sometimes used more for curved walls etc as its more flexable then pine, however when carpenters nail mdf it can sometimes cause it to have bloated nail holes which are difficult to be rectified during painting...therefore its mroe commonly found in the very cheapest housing, also msf comes pre-primed to make painting cheaper. I found your question alittle odd, are you thinking that because mdf is pre-primed the grey colour you would be happy with that finish on ur home ? I'm not sure how you find painting real wood a waste, pine is a very cheap type of wood and is generally used with painting it in mind, Generally speaking if people are after a natural timber finish, they would use a higher quality material like cedar or merbau possibly, tassie oak. Even then the material qould have to be oiled i.e painted stain. to give you an idea I believe pines worth under $3 per metre. Re: Skirting boards... 6Dec 10, 2009 6:02 pm Pine comes pre-primed like the MDF for paint finish and is generally finger-jointed. Furniture grade pine is used if the the pine is being stained or lacquered of which can look very nice. Other common options are Western Red Cedar or hardwood such as Meranti, Vic Ash or Jarrah Building Standards; Getting It Right! Is this acceptable in a new house build. Floors where installed by builder. Already chips in board and skirting is not flush 0 190 I'm about to put down some Merbau. Is it necessary to oil underneath the boards before laying? 0 1936 |
