Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 09, 2009 8:51 pm PTF -perfect timber floors have given us a quote for paquetry which is 2K dearer than engineered ,it looks good ,feels good but other than seeing it in shop floors I dont know anyone who has parquetry and like your opinion ? Plus any contacts in the south east of Melbourne by the way it cost around $140/sq mtr and its kempas timber Thanks Re: Parquetry flooring -your verdict 2Dec 09, 2009 9:02 pm Hi Andy, do you mean they are doing the parquetry (engineered) putting it onto a board and then putting it down or is it floating floor styled? Is that what you mean? I would recommend getting the parquetry laid into the floor rather than 'engineered'. Parquetry is fabulous and if you are considering it I highly recommend you go for it! For our next home we will be having parquetry. If you have heated floors, I don't recommend parquetry or any timber floor as this can cause 'warping'. Is $140/sq mtr the finished quote or just to lay the floor? Re: Parquetry flooring -your verdict 3Dec 10, 2009 8:26 pm Hi Its solid blocks of wood laid on a subfloor to stop any expansions /contractions . It looks great ,but the timber we chose is kempas which is a redish wood and when it is lacquered it comes out a bit dark. Iam waiting to see more samples . txs for the comment Re: Parquetry flooring -your verdict 5Dec 10, 2009 8:39 pm Where abouts are you Andy? I would suggest getting a few different quotes to compare and then go with what seems reasonable for the quality of work they do. Are you getting block parquetry? Re: Parquetry flooring -your verdict 6Dec 10, 2009 8:50 pm Hi Andy I would go for parquetry over engineered any time, no thinking required . We are also interested in parquetry (have to add real, so there's no confusion). What's the total area which you want covered? What are you planning to lay underneath it? Have you had any other timber type quoted? From what I know, parquetry is the most expensive timber flooring type My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Parquetry flooring -your verdict 7Dec 11, 2009 5:19 pm We have pretty much made up our mind and sticking with Parquetry but not sure what wood to go for ? initially it was kempas ,then I spoke to someone who did parquetry in blackbutt and it looks great but cost more . its a larger area 108sqmtrs in herring bone or double herring bone .keep looking I say till we get the cost and timber right. kempas is cheaper by the way because it comes from indonesio. Re: Parquetry flooring -your verdict 8Dec 11, 2009 6:33 pm Yeah, the spieces vary greatly in cost, but also in appearance and wearability. I myself would love tassie oak, but that is out of the question at the moment just because it's a softer wood. Next on the list is tallowwood for its nicest, most natural light brown colour. I cannot find any other timber with such a nice, soft shade. However, I would happily settle for spotted gum because it's really hard (janka 11). Also in the closest selection are blackbutt and stringybark. It definitely doesn't hurt to get as many quotes as you can, for as many species as you like. The quote also needs to say what exactly is the installation method and what goes under the timber, does it include sand and polish, what kind of polish, etc. Only then we can truly compare quotes and decide how much we are willing to fork out My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Parquetry flooring -your verdict 9Dec 12, 2009 7:39 am Hi Your right ,I have learnt so much from looking on the net . I found this great site called myfloor.com.au it gives you heaps of info on installation etc. we are going with shutters in the family room for all the windows in basswood ,which if iam not mistaken is a brown. therefore the floor texture has to sort of blend in with the windows .so it comes down to picking the right timber ,preferably hardwood with a janka over 9 and then staining it to get the right texture Re: Parquetry flooring -your verdict 10Dec 12, 2009 8:04 am Hmmmm ... from what I can quickly find on the net, you can stain or paint The Basswood Shutters in many colours. So, it looks like you need to decide on the colour, it's not "in-built" as with timber floors (well, unless you stain the floors ). quote from web - " ... they are custom painted in a wide range of colours ... " Unless I need to dig deeper (ie. search more, read more ) ... My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Parquetry flooring -your verdict 11Dec 12, 2009 12:17 pm Herring bone is beautiful. Blackbutt is very nice. My fave wood is kauri and I would hate to think how much it would cost. 1000000% definitely add insulation. I have in my home and it makes a big difference minimising sound transfer. Insulation is pretty cheap and definitely worth it 2 3660 Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 11486 Hi there, I'm a conplete newbie to this, but I'm looking to put a floor down in my 6x9m shed.
