Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 08, 2009 2:15 pm Hi Everyone, Need some help here as we are clueless as to which hot water system we should choose. We have 2 options Option 1: Rheem 340 Litre electric boosted Solar Loline Hot water service with 2 collectors Model 511340 or Option 2: RheemPlus 170 litre gas hot water service model 314170 Which is cheaper to Run? Which one is more efficient? It will not cost me either way its inlcuded as standard I just need to choose. Also not sure if this makes a difference but I have opted for a GAS Cooktop oven (this does not mean I need to have a Gas hot water system also do I?) Thanks. Obviously gas is available to the area, so I wonder why the only solar option has an electric booster? I have no idea about electric boosted systems (ours is gas-boosted), but there's some good info here, and links to other sites as well: http://www.urbanecology.org.au/topics/solarhotwater.html Re: Hot Water system Solar or Gas? 3Dec 08, 2009 2:38 pm Do your bit for the environment and go solar. They automatically included Gas Hot water system on my tender I wonder if this is cost driven on the builders side (it may be cheaper for them to put gas system??) Use the internet to do some calculations to figure out the difference in running costs. Electric hot water is usually way more expensive than gas to run, but I don't know how much of a difference there is between the two types of boosters on a solar HWS. Climate would have an impact. Being in Sydney, you'd get plenty of free heating from the sun, so perhaps it's not a big deal. Re: Hot Water system Solar or Gas? 6Dec 08, 2009 4:25 pm And electricity prices will increase... I would opt for the gas-boosted solar personally Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Our Crazy Owner Builder Journey! Re: Hot Water system Solar or Gas? 8Dec 08, 2009 9:21 pm IF you can afford gas boosted solar then go for that. We have electric boosted solar atm and it's great, our electricity bill in summer is lower (run reverse cycle air con in summer and heating in winter) so the only variable between seasons is the hot water essentially. We've previously had instantaneous gas and that was brilliant too. I'd love gas boosted solar though and we have included it as an option but may ditch it if we can't afford it in our build knowing that gas is a better option than electric anyway. Gas is cheaper than off peak electric. Solar is cheaper than both of those but it takes longer to recover the cost of set up too. Re: Hot Water system Solar or Gas? 9Dec 08, 2009 10:35 pm We have natural gas to the house so we went for a solar with a gas booster, cost $2000 more than the gas system but with energy prices going up and we plan to be in this house of at least 10year it was worth the extra cost.
