Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 08, 2009 11:34 am Hi all. Just wondering what the average size of a first home would/should be. Please help to find out and chose one of the options below. Re: Your Home 2Dec 08, 2009 11:46 am This is way too broad a question - apart from budget, obvious things like family size (some people are building their first home by themself, others have 6 kids ) land size, lifestyle etc etc etc. There is no average and now should or would answer to this question. The size house YOU build has to be right for you. Re: Your Home 3Dec 08, 2009 12:20 pm I am a single 25 year old buying by myself. I chose a 21sq home. My sister will live with me. Current build Porter Davis Brookwater 49, Eucalypt Wollert Build: 24th Jul 2015 - Approx Mar 2016 Previous build DFH Columbia 21, Lyndarum Epping North Build:20th Jul 2009 - 18th Dec 2009 Re: Your Home 4Dec 08, 2009 12:36 pm No option small enough for my first home - 8sq (single by myself) Our second home was 24sq (married with one child) and now our third and final home is 54sq (married with No.3 due very shortly). Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Your Home 5Dec 08, 2009 7:24 pm Hi Helyn. I agree that it is too broad a question that cuts across all demographics. However if we take into consideration that majority of first home buyers are married couples (some with a baby on the way), you could put a rough estimate on what kind of house most people would go for. I do agree that the house you buy is the house that is right for you. Thanks for replying. Others dont get a chance to buy a house until they have several children. Others are buying with their extended family. Re: Your Home 7Dec 08, 2009 7:57 pm I agree, it's a big generalisation! Both my brother and I are first home owners and have both built our own houses as single people 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' But I am building with my Mum. If I was building just for myself and my son, I'd say somewehre between 15sq and 20sq. Would be plenty for us. But add in a partner to that (and with that the possibility of more kids) then probably around 30 to 35sq. So many variables.... and I am just one person. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Your Home 9Dec 08, 2009 8:12 pm Our first home is 33 squares for me, my husband and a little one on the way. Re: Your Home 10Dec 08, 2009 8:41 pm Not our first home but it is our first build 2 adults 2 children 5 and 10 House 20sq House + Garage + Alfresco + Verandah 27sq Plenty bog enough, functional, 4 bedrooms, loiunge, dining AND open plan large kitchen/diner. No wasted space, all in proportion Point of all that, you can waste 1-2 square on a fabulous 'entry' that might not serve a functional purpose. An open p;an family room could easily be 1-2 square way to big (albeit you have a sense of space) Sooo, the size or what is right etc is irrelevant. What do you need, what can you afford. How many squares is an afterthought Re: Your Home 11Dec 08, 2009 9:25 pm My very first home I bought was 25sqs, 4bdrm, 1 bathroom on 2 acres, I had 2 young children and was quiet young myself. Our second home, which is what we are building now is 40sqrs but we have another 2 children. This is the first home we have built but not owned. I agree its a very broad question, the size of your home is about your lifestyle, family, wants/needs etc etc not ours.
