Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 42Nov 26, 2012 3:55 pm I've replied to this post before some time ago...12mths probably. The 2 end rooms have white timber blinds. They were cheap and I think they really compliment the room nicely. The other rooms at the front have block out blinds and a sheer curtain. There may be photos somewhere on this thread. It's been a while since I was on the forum so I need to get back into the swing of things.... However I think by having plantation shutters for the front 2 windows...they are very big windows would cost alot but the look would be really different to what it is now. I think it would look better and I'd probably have them open more often than what I do now with what I currently have. Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 43Dec 15, 2012 2:11 pm We have done plantation shutters in the front two rooms, our bedroom, ensuite, kids bathroom, toilet, kitchen and computer room. We purchased them from shutterkits (mentioned above) and painted them ourselves. We painted them with little rollers and the finish is smooth and fabulous. We stained the front window shutters, the shutterkit shutters are all western red cedar they look just delicious stained naturally. You can see some pictures on my blog. http://subject2finance.blogspot.com.au/2010/09/last-of-plantation-shutters.html http://subject2finance.blogspot.com.au/2010/06/plantation-shutters-painted-and.html Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 44Dec 16, 2012 6:55 am nice one netadelle. I'm looking at shutterkits as well- how did you find them, good quality? I'll probably get the prepainted ones (white). Build Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=57639 Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 45Dec 16, 2012 10:12 am plucka - the instructions to put them together where easy to follow, it only took my husband about 30mins per shutter to put them together. In the main bedroom the middle shutters are only held on by magnets, which is perfectly fine until your 2 year old decides to climb up them! The shutter fell of the window and made a big dent in the wall, but it didn't damage the shutter at all. So I would say they hold up pretty well. They are very good quality and I just love that they are an Australian wood, made by an Australian company. Not bassawood out of Indonesia that is grown in areas where they have destroyed native forests! Just beware that with the pre-painted ones the ends of the blades arn't painted, so you will still need to paint the ends yourself, but as the shutterkit guy says if you get any excess paint on the pre-painted blade it will just 'ping' off. http://www.shutterkits.com.au/shutter-kits/pre-painted-white-kit-shutters/specifications Just ring and talk to him, he is really helpful! Painting them ourselves didn't take that much time and effort either, we both work full-time and we would do about an hour a night, it only took about 3 days to do 5 shutters. (tricks like wrapping the roller in glad-wrap overnight meant that we didn't have to clean up until the very end, also we bought a small roller thing, then lots of roller brush covers, so we didn't clean the 'rollers' themselves, just threw them out at the end and cleaned the metal roller holder thing) Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 47Dec 16, 2012 6:35 pm Thanks for the info netadelle. Yeah knew about the need to paint the ends but seeing as I'm looking at doing about 9 windows and 2 bi fold doors I dread at the thought of hand painting that many hence the pre painted ones for sure. They look great and so much cheaper than the anywhere else. If you can get them ... get them... easy to clean and look fanbloodytasic! But also get double glazed windows if you can or look st some kind of tinting/film or even external shutter.blind to keep the heat out. Cheers Cozmo ______________________________ Building a PD Heywood 29 http://fromevetoeternity.blogspot.com/ Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 52Mar 08, 2013 2:48 pm I find they are great with heat. Once because the gap between the window pane and the wood is quite deep with ours. Very good insulation. We have basswood ones and they are amazing. Roller blinds don't go all the way to the edge which lets both light and heat in. Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 53Mar 08, 2013 7:16 pm great to hear about the basswood we have just ordered ours we will have the waterproof type in the main bathroom and the ensuite in bed 4 the the shutters in bed 2 3 and 4 we decided just to have the slim venetian at the front of the house because of the windows and also in bed 1 ensuite. as we have a view from the family room we are going for the sunscreen see through blinds Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 54Mar 08, 2013 7:37 pm I'm another one who agrees with them being great at keeping the heat AND the cold out. As soon as I open mine, I can instantly feel the heat or cold come through (depending on the season!). Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! The house faces west and when I've opened the shutters to open a window, the heat takes your breath away. Now I have them, I wouldn't have anything else. Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 56Mar 20, 2013 9:39 pm Out of interest, what is the cost of plantation shutters? I remember once talking to a lady at spotlight and she said she had quoted a customer $40k for her entire house... On various forums people have said they've got shutters in bathrooms and the main bedroom only to save on cost. I wonder how much it was to do their entire house? Anyone have any quote experiences? How much would you budget for all window coverings?? Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 57Mar 20, 2013 9:55 pm Our 3 bedrooms cost $2400 all up. Not as expensive but it depends what type you get and how big your windows are... we got 3 of them like this below.... So worth it! They dont suit all windows but try them. You will love them! Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 58Mar 20, 2013 10:06 pm We are getting the whole house (4 bed 2 storey) in plantation shutters. Only sliding doors we are getting roller blinds. I think we have about 19 windows, costing approx 10.5k. We are getting the budget ones in white. We built the Wisdom Majestic 40 - moved in!
