Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 30, 2009 4:10 pm For those who have plantation shutters, would you mind sharing the pics? And for those who don't have plantation shutters, would you consider them if they were cheaper? Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 2Nov 30, 2009 4:14 pm Yep I love them. We would get them all across the front of our house if we could afford it. We can't, so we're getting the wide slat venetians instead (63.5mm) which do have basically the same look anyway. Have decided to lash out in the ensuite and go for the white plantations there though. That's my indulgence! Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 3Nov 30, 2009 4:24 pm LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE plantation shutters! We've got 15 windows (assorted sizes) plus one opening between dining room and pool room to do... we've been saving for yonks... Wouldn't have anything else!!! Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 4Nov 30, 2009 4:27 pm Nope. I think they are expensive for what they are and I'm not really a big fan of them. I think they look wonderful in the right home, but they've been done to death which immediately turns me off something. ![]() Every single display home I walk into has them.... it would be nice to see something different. I also don't like how they block a lot of light. I know the slats are adjustable, but the frame of the shutter itself, overlaps the window. Not a problem on a large window, but can overpower a small window. Might not be a good idea to listen to me though, becasue I am positive I will be in the minority on this. ![]() ![]() I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 5Nov 30, 2009 4:28 pm Yes I love them and would want them if I could. Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 9Nov 30, 2009 5:01 pm I love the look of them in bathrooms but actually think they can de-tract from some facades. Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 10Nov 30, 2009 5:30 pm Yes absolutely love them! We will definitely get them in the ensuite and bathroom. Initially I wanted them at the front too but I think we will wait until we see how the front turns out and then decide. It may not contrast well with our facade and we don't want the shutters to be the attraction as the front if the home is quite unique. As for the other windows we are not sure yet but definitely if we think it'll go we will get them. I have always loved them and I really hate curtains. Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 11Nov 30, 2009 5:39 pm We'll eventually be putting them in our bedroom and retreat, but as with most people, we had way too many demands on our cash flow when we first moved in to splurge on such an expensive item. So we opted for cheap timber-look venetians as a temporary fix, which look great.... only they don't work on our corner window. ![]() ![]() Oh well, the shutters can wait just a bit longer. But the crick in my neck from ****** all crooked to get away from the light might end up costing as much in physio bills as the shutters would have in the first place. ![]() I love the look of them in bathrooms but actually think they can de-tract from some facades. I agree that they don't look right on every house. Some facades just look wrong with them. I think sometimes people get caught up in a fashion (fad?) without considering whether it works with everything else they've chosen... Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 14Nov 30, 2009 7:17 pm No The only ones I liked in the display homes was when there was an opening in the wall between rooms but no not really. I think these could date ahome in 15 or so years time and prefer a more timeless appeal........Plus they are expensive but I don't like them Harribeka Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 15Nov 30, 2009 7:25 pm Yep, love em too! Only have one window, the main bedroom, on front of the house so I can justify getting them for our room at least ![]() Caz & Co ALL MOVED IN!! Now comes all the hard work-decorating.... I don't think they will look dated in houses that really suit that look, any more than the house itself will date. Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 18Nov 30, 2009 7:40 pm I think they are very fashionable "now" but will date in 5 years time when the next big fashion in window furnishings comes along. We have them in 3 rooms - our study, our son's bedroom and our ensuite. They are lovely, easy to "use" but I do dust them every single week to keep them looking clean. If I had them everywhere this would drive me insane. Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 19Nov 30, 2009 7:44 pm ![]() Yes, definitely! ![]() I must agree I love the look of them. We will definitely have white ones in the main bedroom, ensuite and bathroom. The rest of the house not sure but can say that Vertical blinds are a definite noooooooooo ![]() PCI Done Re: Plantation shutters - if you could afford it, would you? 20Nov 30, 2009 7:46 pm ![]() I think they are very fashionable "now" but will date in 5 years time when the next big fashion in window furnishings comes along.
