Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Go for Ducted vacuum or not? 2Nov 28, 2009 10:03 am There is another thread about ducted vacuum system on H1 somewhere...... we are having it installed for free by our builder as part of their standard package and I can't wait. No more nasty fumes inside the house. No more bumping the vacuum into the skirting boards and making marks. It a fabulous concept. I have heard they are a pain when they get blocked but guess we'll have to wait and see. Re: Go for Ducted vacuum or not? 4Nov 28, 2009 6:11 pm Oh & don't forget the Vacpan while you're at it. Check out the thread : http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=6609&hilit=vacpan EDIT : For me, the greatest advantage is not having to lug around a machine bumping into furniture & walls - as mentioned before I've never had one before, so at the moment I'm loving the convenience. Thumbs up from me! Love the vacpan also - a quick daily sweep of the kitchen & all is clean. Re: Go for Ducted vacuum or not? 9Nov 29, 2009 11:19 am Well I love mine because we have many stairs and the hose is very long and I don't have to continually unplug it to do another room and I was always bashing into walls with my barrel vac, I get very frustrated and angry when I vacuum and it was detrimental to the wellbeing of my walls and of course the vacpan in the kitchen fabulous. My place is long too - but I just use an extension cord and have power points in strategic places. I can do the whole house from two power points. Or three.... can't remember, it's been a while since I did it. I make my house-elves do the vaccing. I don't even know what a vacpan is.... am I missing out on something fabulous? A Vacpan is a little kick plate that goes into the kickboard in the kitchen. Basically you can do a sweep up the vacpan and then kick a lever with your foot and it sucks it up! Can't wait to use ours. So excited!! I'm another one of those that tends to bash the walls with the vacuum. Re: Go for Ducted vacuum or not? 13Nov 29, 2009 12:28 pm Southies Oh & don't forget the Vacpan while you're at it. Check out the thread : http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=6609&hilit=vacpan Just had a squiz at the vacpan thread. Fabulous. We get dv as part of our building package but I didn't know how useful this great vacpan system was. We just paid $60 to get another powerpoint installed in one of the ensuite cupboards so I could plug the hand held dustbuster in. Thanks to you guys I think we will delete this extra pp and install a vacpan system instead! I think we will also get one in the kitchen while we are at it. Thanks guys. Re: Go for Ducted vacuum or not? 14Nov 29, 2009 4:40 pm simpson Thanks everyone for your positive response. Hey Dollar and Hels, Would you like to share your experience for "no" reason? Cheers, Simpson Sure We had it at our last house (which we bought established) and it was smelly and dirty plus the hose was quite cumbersome to use. We all have a lot of allergies and asthma so I use a Wertheim vacuum with a turbo head. It is the only one I have found that removes all the cat fur and really deep cleans the carpet. That is why I wouldn't have ducted vac in any house that we built, because to me it would be a waste of money. Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Re: Go for Ducted vacuum or not? 15Nov 29, 2009 4:48 pm I have lived in a house for the past 20 years that has had a ducted vacuum and it is brilliant. So much easier to vacuum when you don't have to lug the thing around and the walls will love you. I love it so much I am getting one in my new house I am building. Re: Go for Ducted vacuum or not? 16Nov 29, 2009 5:08 pm Simpson, A well designed ducted vacuum is an excellent investment! I struggle to understand Hels response. I can only suggest that her system was not well designed and inefficient. I have seen some really bad systems with vac units mounted in dumb positions. The vac unit must be mounted so it exhausts all air to atmosphere away from entrances to the building. Often, people have them mounted in a garage. If they run them with the main garage door closed, and the door from the garage into the house open, it allows the exhaust air to re-enter the house, which is really dumb. So go for it, but make sure it is powerful, well engineered, and designed to work efficiently. Consider the noise factor too. They can be noisy, but can be effectively muffled. Ash. Ash. Re: Go for Ducted vacuum or not? 17Nov 29, 2009 5:21 pm Just personal choice I think really. When the builder asked we said 'no way'. Plus we love our Dyson so much we just couldn't abandon it (lol). I also didn't want vacuum ducts in the walls around the house. I'm sure they are good and seem practical rather than lugging a vacuum around and so forth. I would imagine the ducted vacuum would have a bigger storage compartment to hold the dust etc so therefore not requiring it to be emptied as much. Re: Go for Ducted vacuum or not? 18Nov 29, 2009 5:23 pm One question, can you ever clean the vacuum pipes if the are in the wall? I don't like the idea of things being sucked into the wall and through the house and into a storage chamber-say in the garage. (pipes get dirty)? Food particles stuck around sides of pipes? Yes the unit was in the garage. I think the thing that put me off was the fact that the hose was dirty and split so it was held together with tape. And it only had 1 brush head that wasn't very good on carpet compared to my turbo head. I also don't like the outlets in the walls as my 2 year old would constantly ping them open all day long However, I'm sure if it was a better unit that was clean and looked after properly then it would be quite good. It's just that I didn't have a very good experience with one so I guess that made my mind up. Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new.
