Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 25, 2009 9:35 pm Hi all,
I've been a long to lurker on this forum, so now that my house is finally under construction, and that today I finished my last exam for the year, I thought it was about time to do the right thing and introduce myself and our build. We came to the decision of building by looking at existing homes, and eventually gave up on the idea. We thought it would be easier to build a house we wanted, than to buy something existing and renovate. We had a look at display homes, and quite liked the Eden Brae range of homes. We weren't sure whether to build a single storey and buy a bigger block of land, or double storey and a smaller block of land. As we liked the Memphis the most, we hunted for a block of land and found a suitably sized block in Kellyville Ridge (650sqm). We made quite a few changes to the house, the most significant being adding a study to the front of the house. All these changes unfortunately took longer than expected, so we are a bit behind schedule (and really wishing we had our ducted air-conditioning for the summer). I've generally been quite happy with Eden Brae, just not so impressed with their kitchen subcontractor but that is another story. Our site start commenced 28th October and we have had quite a lot of progress to date. Hope you enjoy the pictures. We are also building with EB and are in the construction phase having started at the end of August. I know what you mean about the Kitchen contractor; they took about six weeks to finally get us our quote, and then the numbers that we got back for the "Upgrades" where truly exorbitant. Hopefully it all works out in the end. Good luck with your build, and I hope things continue to progress well for you. Cheers, CMET Re: Building an EB Memphis 31 4Nov 26, 2009 8:36 am We are also building a memphis with a study at the front. Do you have your plans available to view. We added the study by using the saville main bed and study because we didn't want the parents retreat. But we also swapped the main bed and garage positions, we're waiting for our tender presentation in 2 weeks. Is it just your kitchen upgrades that has made the kitchen a difficuly thing? Did you add 2 squares too? Is that the study or larger elsewhere as well? Even with the cost of a new sink and the possibility of damaged tiles, we will still be well in front. Fernyhouse We are also building a memphis with a study at the front. Hi Fernyhouse, I won't send the plans out of respect to Eden Brae, but our study is on the other side of the foyer opposite the main bedroom, with the garage moved accross accordingly. The price of the kitchen upgrades made it a difficult thing. If you would like Essastone benchtops, I would suggest getting them installed after handover yourselves. Overall our house is 33 squares, the study is about 1.5 squares, and we added some more space to the rumpus and rear bedrooms. We then reduced the width of our house slightly (390mm) so it would fit on the block. Overall, I've been very impressed with the construction so far. There have only been a couple of minor issues, but our SS is on top of them. Impressive points for EB: * Slab was poured accurately - I've heard of custom builders stuffing this up! * Frame design was very good - a relative of mine teaches construction and was very impressed, beyond the standard he was expecting and better than a lot of custom builders would do. * Brickwork is very good so far, looking forward to them being cleaned. Some more photos to come in the next day or two. Re: Building an EB Memphis 31 - Brickwork Started 17Dec 18, 2009 10:52 am With so many different hands doing the brickwork, I would be checking that mortar joins are relatively equal. We have areas where mortar is thicker than other spots & brickwork doesn't line up. Stand back & have a good look. Re: Building an EB Memphis 31 - Brickwork Started 19Dec 20, 2009 10:18 am Brickwork is still continuing, but unfortunately I may have been too early with my praise on EB. The three windows along the front (the 2 narrow ones and the centre one with the arch) have been set at the incorrect height, unfortunately it means just about that entire wall of brickwork will need to be removed and redone. Anyway, here are some pictures.
