Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 24, 2009 10:38 pm Hi there, We went shopping for carpet today, but were overwhelmed with choices. Does anyone have any tips for chosing carpet? Wool vs nylon? Plush vs Twist? How much did you pay for your carpet per m2? Did you get it from one of those big places like Harvey Norman or Carpet Call, or from elsewhere? Re: Tips for chosing carpet? 2Nov 24, 2009 11:09 pm All depends on if you have kid & animal, in other words how much wear and tear is your carpet going to get. It is important to get a good quality underlay as this will make a huge difference to the feel of the carpet. Also if you go for nylon or synthetic make sure they are solution dyed, that way you will not lose colour if you have to spot clean. Probably confused you more sorry, Cheers Lou http://take2-customdesigndownslope.blogspot.com 07-10-09 omg they have cut the block 14-05-10 we finally have the keys Re: Tips for chosing carpet? 3Nov 24, 2009 11:24 pm I would go wool over nylon for feeling and wear. I love the flat, clean look of plush over the nobbly look of twist piles (and I outright hate patterned and sisal!!!). Having said that, a slight pattern can do wonders for masking stains, and sisal generally cleans up better as you can scrub the heck out of it without ruining the pile!! My main tips on carpet would be colours... The beautiful mocha colours that are currently in fashion are also excellent for masking stains... I wouldn't touch a light coloured carpet unless you never have visitors, no pets and no kids, and don't eat or drink near the carpet. I think I could count on one hand the number of houses I've visited with light carpet where the owners weren't ashamed of some hideous stain that they were attempting to cover with badly placed furniture! Many people choose light colours because they believe that it opens up the room and makes it feel bigger. You can still do this with darker coloured carpets by using lighter colours on walls and such. Charcoal grey looks incredible coupled with wooden floors whereas the coffee colours look awesome with large, creamy coloured tiles. we're not having any carpet at all in our new build, but the tiles throughout will be charcoal grey! If I were having carpet anywhere I would have also used charcoal in a plush pile NZ wool. --- Another thing worth looking at is doubling or tripling your underlay if you enjoy laying on the floor to read or watch tv. Nobody does it by default, and it really isn't requested very often, but it IS doable and feels amazing. My parents are carpet layers, and you could use their entire loungeroom like a bed. It is just *that* comfy!! Doesn't feel squishy to walk on or anything, but so cozy to lay on. Where we live at the moment you get sore ribs and elbows within 30 seconds of laying on the floor with a newspaper (or set of house plans as the case may be Re: Tips for chosing carpet? 4Nov 24, 2009 11:37 pm Hi Rinny, I'm no expert but I'll share the limited info that I do know - Wool - best carpet you can get but most expensive - naturally well wearing, soft and fairly stain resistant. My parents have merino wool carpet. It is lovely, warm in winter and soft to stand on. It was pretty much top of the range I think? Very nice though Nylon - Probably most popular and second best after wool. Affordable, still fairly soft and can be very hard wearing and good stain resistance. This is the carpet we are looking at getting. Solution dyed- man made with colour inside each fibre for colourfastness and highest stain resistance. You can also get this in nylon carpet (probably the best affordable choice). Polypropylene – manmade, these were generally not very soft like wool or nylon. Cheapest choice but mainly used for rentals etc. Check out- carpetchoice: http://www.carpetchoice.com.au/Carpet/S ... Fibres.asp or Carpet court: http://www.carpetcourt.com.au/directory ... _det&cid=6 Generally plush/ cut pile carpet is softest but squashes easily and is hardest to keep clean. Twist and loop are probably best for busy households as they are soft but easier to maintain condition. Any of the textured carpets are easiest to keep dirt out of but are generally not very soft. We are going with a nylon solution dyed twist carpet. It is $40/m2 including installation (this is at the cheaper end of the carpet prices). We chose this carpet as it is soft, hardwearing, stain resistant, has a good warranty and looks nice. We are getting it through carpet choice as this was recommended through our builder. We wanted something that would be hardwearing but also soft for those future little knees to crawl on . As for colours – I would steer clear of cream. It looks nice but is really hard to keep clean (I know people with plush nylon, loop wool and tightly woven nylon cream carpets and they have all complained about keeping them clean!!) We are going for a light chocolate colour so it is still light but will hopefully hide more of those stains. Anyway, I hope this has helped you in some way! What happened is that I saved the 'Building, reno and maintenance' index page in my 'Favourites', so it only gave me those list of topics under that section. Wow, I had no idea there were so many other topics. Cool!, thanks!! Re: Tips for chosing carpet? 10Nov 26, 2009 6:49 pm No problem. Maybe if you pm a Mod, they could move this for you and one of the flooring gurus is more likely to see it and help you out. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Tips for chosing carpet? 11Nov 26, 2009 7:03 pm ooh I love the idea of double layer underlay. I think I MUST include that in my budget now. Remember that carpeting is not too difficult to replace so you can easily do a hard wearing blend carpet if you have young children and then recarpet when they are older. I'd love some 100% wool carpet after spending the last 2 years on a nylon twist carpet but even this nylon carpet looks terribly worn after 2 years with young children. Just be careful with building stability during construction, that is when the structure may be weakened, refer to your engineering drawings for stability methodology. 1 7223 Thank you so much.
