Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 24, 2009 11:18 am We are building a new house and the builders we are going through are suggesting batons as a form of inslulation in walls in a good enough way or insulation. They suggest sarking is quite costly and not really worth it. As batons can provide the same kind of insulation. Can someone please advice if this is correct? Re: Sarking or Batons Insulation? 2Nov 24, 2009 3:45 pm Where are you located? If it's cold in winter I would get as much as possible, especially if it can't be added later. Are you talking about wall or ceiling insulation? In walls I thought you have to have the foil or whatever it is called. I'm sure someone will clarify that. You should also have batts. In the ceiling people usually choose batts and some also then add sarking as well. We have sarking as well and we believe it makes a difference in hot weather. Hubby noticed it when he was at the house during building before the batts were installed. Of course there are many other things that make a difference too, such as orientation (which I guess it's too late for you to do anything about that) and external shading and landscaping (which you can add later). Re: Sarking or Batons Insulation? 3Nov 25, 2009 4:01 am I would personally do both. In fact, I'm "putting my money where my mouth is" and doing exactly that. I wanted to share a post that my husband put on the "building in SA" thread (hope this helps!): Pipe TamDaz Quick Questions - What is the purpose of 'wrapping'? My builder has started bricking the house without wrapping, is this okay? Wrapping (using sarking) I don't think is "standard" yet in Adelaide though I think it should be with the really hot summers. When its used on the walls it acts as a radiant heat barrier. When the sun hits the walls even though it is behind the bricks it reflects a lot of the incoming heat outwards making it easier to keep the house cool. Insulation helps with this as well but combined with sarking it is a lot more effective. It pretty much acts like those silver foil reflectors that some people put inside their car windscreens when they park on a hot summer day. Sarking on the roof is also used as a condensation barrier (to stop insulation from getting wet I think) and is a lot more common. Definitely worth trying to get included even at this late stage for your roof if you don't already have it as it will help a lot in reducing summer heat. And its a real pain to retrofit in your roof later and probably not possible for many walls. Note that it won't help in winter at all as it doesn't stop heat loss through conduction (thats what your bulk insulation is for). There's a few threads in the insulation forums about this with more detail. Building Standards; Getting It Right! Hi all Iām in VIC and had some storm damage in my garage a month ago.
