Our TV niche cost $397 (done during construction, of course), including the power point and aerial connection point. The DVD player fits nicely too - no need for another bulky piece of furniture in the retreat. Re: Can't afford a TV unit? 5Nov 23, 2009 12:04 am I dont get it . Why cant you just wall mount the tv without the niche? Unless you want to put the dvd player in the niche as well? But then i think it wouldnt look as good and clean. But that's just me Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: Can't afford a TV unit? 7Nov 24, 2009 8:31 am Ours is deeper and fits the DVD player and the Mac mini (love our eyeTV). We don't have room on that wall for a sticky-out piece of furniture and it's the perfect place for the TV - which is not wall-mounted, it just sits on its stand in the niche.
If there was no niche, we'd be stuck with a wall-mounted TV and the crappy free-to-air channels. Or a separate unit to hold DVD player etc, which would make the room cluttered - and which I'd smack into every time I walked through the room. The niche also has a cut-away corner, so is open on two sides. The idea was that the TV can be turned towards the couch in the retreat, or towards the bed. Not that we've ever watched TV in bed. Well.... once, but we both fell asleep. Re: Can't afford a TV unit? 8Nov 24, 2009 8:46 am I would prefer to mount the TV on the wall. Anyway that picture, you could not see the full screen from the bed. I don't get it.... Or is it just that I'm not a TV-addicted techno-geek with my entire house wired for some fancy AV system? I like things simple. Re: Can't afford a TV unit? 10Nov 24, 2009 11:45 am I agree with dmynott. You're really limiting the use of a TV in the bedroom if you can't see it whilst in bed. I love the clean look but on a niche that deep, I wouldn't use such a slim mounting bracket, instead I'd use a standard one so the TV wasn't sunken. I like using my TV as an alarm clock to wake up to the news/weather. I do love the look of niche's though, especially for putting trinkets like mini statues and stuff in. For AV stuff however, I prefer hiding components like DVD players/HTPCs away from view completely like in a cabinet (using an IR extender to catch the signal) because I've seen so many cases where someone upgrades something and the new toy pokes out of the niche or its really slim and it just makes it look like its sitting on a shelf instead of part of the wall. Re: Can't afford a TV unit? 11Nov 24, 2009 1:05 pm I'm not a big fan of a niche for a TV as I don't like the look of them. But I do have Shower niche's as I don't like those shower caddy things that hang over the shower rose. my 2 cents Re: Can't afford a TV unit? 12Nov 24, 2009 1:54 pm my 2c, Im not fan of keeping a TV in bedroom. but then again like to watch a DVD (movie sometimes) while on the bed. I will use a laptop in that case. well like to keep all simple. I had an old shower unit that broke on me and when I took it off, there were only 2 water pipes, instead of the normal 2 water pipes and a shower head pipe.
