Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 21, 2009 6:07 pm I got some ideas of cost price from two large project builders today. We will get some quotes on doing a custom build as well for comparisson. For those who did get quotes on both what was the difference? We import a lot of stuff so I know I can get my kitchen cupboards/benches, bathroom cupboards/benches/bath/shower etc, doors, windows, for a lot cheaper than what the builder charges in their prices. The one I spoke to today said they can leave the bath hole empty etc so I can put my own in after and maybe put their standard sliding doors in and put my bifolding doors in after. I can change all my internal doors etc to. It just seems like I could save a lot of money getting stuff myself than what they charge. On the other hand I hear custom builders can cost twice as much as project so the money I save in the goods I import means I would come out even either way? Any help pleeeease Re: Project Vs Custom 4Nov 21, 2009 9:00 pm We are building a custom home, and we are supplies some bath fittings & kitchen appliance ourselves these items will not be covered buy the builder warranty or insurance but they are covered under manufactures warranties & you can get contents insurance to cover the items before handover. I have found using a smaller builder they have been more flexible in allowing us to supplie items. I will just have to go around getting quotes. I love the convenience of a project builder, sign the papers and leave it up to them. But I know I can save 1/5th if I do my own kitchen, doors, windows, stairs etc. DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair That laser level looks lovely! We bought one for less than a quarter of that price off eBay. It worked really well for us and it's still going now, five years later.
