You may be able to build right to the boundary on one side for a certain distance too. That's usually the case with garage side walls, but you'd have to have no eaves and a recessed design for the spouting along that wall. I'd check with your council before doing any work on designing the house - otherwise you may have a lot of disappointment in store.
