I will get to them soon. I always wondered why everyone posts very seldom after handover. There is still so much to do and so many questions. Never any time though. I find myself using the search function a lot though and many of my questions are answered. Or all the threads I knew I wanted to come back to are coming in handy. So where are we up to. Unpacking garage still incomplete, but we do know what is in all of them now. Our Ikea order arrived and everything has been constructed although still waiting on the doors for the units in the formal lounge Library is now unpacked as well. Only one or two boxes left in the main bedroom. Still waiting on shutters, actually still waiting on one more quote which we rescheduled twice. Then we order them. So it's a while for those still. In the meantime I decided against shutters for the formal lounge and the meals area and will go with solar romans or rollers for them. So I need to start over getting quotes for those rooms. I love looking outside to the garden at night. The other rooms will still get shutters and the kids rooms I installed white eco venetians. Side garden is complete and the fairy garden houses are in place as well as the fairy door. I need to find the right fairies for the garden still and a perfect disco ball to hang and catch the light to look like fairies when the sun catches it. The solar led lights are in too and provide lovely lighting to the path. Utility side has road base down and for the pad for the garden shed too. The remainder of the back yard we will turf next week. So far we shifted 7.5 cubic metres of compost and cow manue mix into the back yard by wheelbarrow. We then cultivated it in by hand as well. Along with adding bentonite and spongolite. Waiting on the garden edging to go in and then we can concentrate on the front yard as well. Heavy work for us, neither of us are really physical labour people but we've been working hard and really proud at what we have achieved. It's personalised as well, the side garden paver path is uneven and to me that is perfect rather than architectural straight lines. The plants are a mixture of plants we took from our previous two homes and sentimental plants from our life together that we dug up to move with us. So far they have all survived. Only a couple of the one's we recently bought have not survived once planted in the garden. The herbs are all part of the fairy garden so they will get a lot of attention and picking at the right times. I've started on purchasing decorator pieces too. This is fun. I never felt the need in our old houses. That stuff was just clutter. Now it is great to see something becoming a feature. Re: Fernyhouse HAS finishing laying turf 124Apr 22, 2011 2:37 pm Pics to come later today.
We finished laying the turf before lunchtime. Quick work after all the prep taking so long. I've just given it a water with season and now sitting back watching the kids run through the sprinkler. I figure thir little feet are not going to harm the grass too much right now. I'll get some molasses to it as soon as I can get my hands on some. Cutting the turf is not much fun. My husband started using my avanti bread knife when he did the front yard yesterday so I continued with that today. We ended up with about 20-25 too many rolls so have given them to our neighbor and thrown their plans of heading out on dirt bikes. Neighbour is now finished too, I'll be interested to see how theirs goes as it's just gone straight onto the existing soil. They managed to cover two thirds of their front yard. I can't believe what some people do by themselves!! Did you do a fancy turf prep, with cultivating/hoeing and all the additives, or the standard prep? BTW, love your shelving !! Is it custom made?? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Fernyhouse HAS finished laying turf with pics 127Apr 22, 2011 5:42 pm Fancy prep I guess. Followed Fu's recommendations with the products we were able to get our hands on.
We didn't go for organic soil as most of them had sand in them, so went for an organic compost, plus cow manure, bentonite, spongolite, seasol, bactivate. All mixed in by hand with a cultivator so we didn't start to level it out until then and removed the building debris as we cultivated. No point digging over the same soil twice was my opinion. That took a lot of time and I know there are still bits of roof tile in there, but at least I know it's not in the top 200mm. A rotary how would have been great though. I'll compare to the neighbour who we gave the remaining turf to as they just laid it straight down. Re: Fernyhouse HAS finished laying turf with pics 128Apr 22, 2011 10:51 pm Fernyhouse ...
