Re: Large open space living areas and cornices 5Nov 20, 2009 10:02 pm lol I'm a minority here.........I think the first pic is soooo much nicer and the drop down thingy boxes in the room and makes it looks smaller. DA approved Waiting on a few more Builder's quotes. Re: Large open space living areas and cornices 6Nov 20, 2009 11:55 pm I prefer a cornice. The no cornice look is kind of unfinished and I like a more restrained use of bulkhead, otherwise it loses its impact iykwim. Also it does make the ceiling look lower. Re: Large open space living areas and cornices 7Nov 21, 2009 12:10 am I'm going to be difficult and say that i like them both I'd only have the bulkheads in a large room tho, as they do make a room appear smaller. And just on a side note, i really like that green wall colour in the third picture. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=22766 - my build thread! Time waits for no man. Unless that man is Chuck Norris. Re: Large open space living areas and cornices 9Nov 21, 2009 7:14 am I dislike the bulkheads in the first room for some reason, but like the second one.... I like both the no-cornice look and the raised/dropped ceiling (which is it - raised or dropped? ), but I prefer the bulkhead thing only as features, not through the whole house..... We have a raised ceiling with bulkheads in our entry, and then we have a dropped ceiling in our retreat, but the rest of the house has standard cornices. The dropped ceiling here doesn't dominate the room ('scuse the uncarpeted, unfurnished look - it's the only pic I can find quickly ) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I think that's why I dislike the first pic of the open living room - that dropped ceiling really dominates the room. Re: Large open space living areas and cornices 10Nov 21, 2009 7:26 am I agree, I don't like it in the first living area pic either. I think the reason is that the furnishing and style of the room is classic/country and the dropped ceiling just doesn't match. The second pic is more modern so the ceiling fits in more. Like kek, I have the feature bulkhead in the entry way. The entire entry is raised in comparison to the rest of the roof though, so the bulkhead pretty much drops to the ceiling height of the rest of the house (if that makes sense). I like cornice, no cornice and bulkheads.... but I think they should all be used wisely rather than randomly. I'd think about the style of the rooms and the overall feel of the house before I made a decision either way. Terrence Malick Re: Large open space living areas and cornices 11Nov 21, 2009 12:09 pm kek and joles, do you think your bulkheads are not as high (?) as the ones in the pics I posted or is it just the angle that's different? Re: Large open space living areas and cornices 13Nov 21, 2009 12:56 pm gettingThere kek and joles, do you think your bulkheads are not as high (?) as the ones in the pics I posted or is it just the angle that's different? I'm guessing it's the angle...? Mine are 300mm and I expect Joles' are too. They somehow don't seem that deep - I had to actually measure them when the plaster went on, because I was sure they were too small. Keep in mind that it would only work with a high ceiling - having bulkheads 300mm lower than the ceiling height could make it a bit claustrophobic with standard height ceilings. Mine are 9' throughout the house, and 10' in the entry (so the bulkheads are at the same level as all the other ceilings). Even the bulkhead in the retreat is still 8.5'. That actually makes my seating area seem like a cosy nook. If the ceiling was lower, the bulkhead might be opressive. I'm too lazy to go look up the actual measurements or to convert to metric.... Re: Large open space living areas and cornices 14Nov 21, 2009 1:17 pm Our entrance bulkhead is about 300mm also and they do actually look quiet big compared to some, until I had seen others though, I didn't take much notice! Here is ours... http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p371/brojas7906/f8ceacae.jpg Building Thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=13002 Site start: 8th July 2009 Handover: 11/12/2009! 5 months total build time. 40 sqs of luxuary...Bliss! Re: Large open space living areas and cornices 15Nov 21, 2009 1:41 pm I like both depending on the location and how they are used. I'm not a fan of the second pic the op posted as it seems a bit too much, maybe if it was only around the edges of the room or just the kitchen. Our house has the kitchen in the middle and the dining on one side and living on the other. We are having a bulkhead over the kitchen area, with high ceilings through the rest of the living area with shadowline cornices (not the CSR ones, but where it has a gap between the ceiling and the wall IFYKWIM?) Re: Large open space living areas and cornices 16Nov 21, 2009 5:07 pm We have a very long hallway, but the 'entrance' part of the halway is slightly wider. In this section we are having 3m celings with a bulkhead to 2.7 and then when the hallway narrows the 2.7 bulkhead will actually continue and form the rest of the houses 2.7m ceiling. Does that make sense? Yet to see what it looks like though! lol Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Re: Large open space living areas and cornices 18Nov 21, 2009 5:16 pm In general I prefer no cornice over cornices in modern finished sort of homes. Those bulkhead bits look nice in big open rooms. I spoke to a couple of well known project builders today and asked if they do no cornices but they said NOOOO and only do it in entry foyer/small rooms sort of thing because of cracking down the track.
