Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 20, 2009 9:36 am Trying to work out what is a good size for a patio we will be building after handover - couldn't squeeze alfresco into the budget so will be getting carpenter friend to build us one. I'm thinking the merbau deck, not sure what sort of roof yet.....We want it to go the length of our family area (4.8m) but not sure how far out to go..... How big is your alfresco or patio area? What have you got on it? Would you go smaller/bigger if you could? (Pics are always good too ) Cheers Caz Caz & Co ALL MOVED IN!! Now comes all the hard work-decorating.... We haven't moved in yet, but we will have a 10 seater table, bbq and small high table with 4 stools around it (like at the TAB ). We will have a TV mounted on the wall as well. Here are some pics, sorry they are all I have . http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u353/joles_photo/2009-11-05_11-08-36_051120091366.jpg From inside the lounge room. http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u353/joles_photo/2009-10-13_12-22-37_131020091304-1.jpg From inside the family room. Currently planning to deck it in Merbau and build a pergola over it for cover. Re: How big is your alfresco/patio? 4Nov 20, 2009 9:58 am The area of mine is 5.6m x 6.5m and I elected not to get the builder to do the roofing under the house roof line as I want daylight to hit the windows. I will be building a roof on it soon though with alternating colorbond and laserlite 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' We put our alfresco down the side of the house which will be 6m x 3.9m, we will also have another alfresco type area (well pool area) under a 5 x 4m roof. DA approved Waiting on a few more Builder's quotes. I will be building a roof on it soon though with alternating colorbond and laserlite ^^This is a really important consideration. Something to think about whichever type of structure you go with. That's one of the things I like about our alfresco. The rooms off it have other windows for the light source so they are not too dark. The exception being the study. Re: How big is your alfresco/patio? 11Nov 20, 2009 1:47 pm cazoraz WOW that is huge! What have you got for the roof in the extended area? Looks great! Hehe thanks. It's designed to suit a big house (>50Sq), the entire area (including family room) can be opened using bifolds to have about 80m2 undercover in a single space. I can seat 50+ people in the space for dinner if I need to. The roofing is Laserlite and straw mesh screening you can get at Bunnings. Re: How big is your alfresco/patio? 12Nov 20, 2009 2:09 pm Hi there, Our alfresco is 6.0m x 6.0m (36m2) which is under roof but not house roof line, we made it pitched roof instead. There are x2 side bits, about 3.3m x 3.0m each that one day we will roof also to make it a bit bigger. Edited to add photos. http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p371/brojas7906/b324ef56.jpg http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p371/brojas7906/739866f6.jpg Building Thread viewtopic.php?f=31&t=13002 Site start: 8th July 2009 Handover: 11/12/2009! 5 months total build time. 40 sqs of luxuary...Bliss! Re: How big is your alfresco/patio? 13Nov 20, 2009 2:50 pm Well, mine looks exactly the same as Joles'.... except for colours of bricks and windows. Size is pretty much the same too (I think hers is a fraction wider). We're about to pave the al fresco and extend the paving to cover the adjoining area, about 4m x 7.5m roughly. That section won't be roofed at this stage - we have concerns about loss of light. But down the track, we may add a shade sail or retractable awning...or maybe a pergola that still lets sun through in winter. It'll be something like this, only without the pool : We plan to move our large 8-seater table and chairs to the new section and get an outdoor lounge setting for the under cover area. We'll build in our bbq against the wall, over where the pool is in the display pic, and we should be able to fit a bar and stools in somewhere. Re: How big is your alfresco/patio? 14Nov 20, 2009 3:00 pm Ours is a gabled verandah, built after the house, with colourbond roof, it is 6m x 11m - so I guess it is 66m2 (gee I am good at maths ) with stencilled concrete floor, it has garage wall/door on one short side, house on one long side, divideing fence on other long side, small gap between fence and roof, and open to garden at other end. Shown here from both ends. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj187/nurselovescoffee/HPIM1446.jpg http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj187/nurselovescoffee/HPIM1447.jpg Re: How big is your alfresco/patio? 15Nov 20, 2009 3:48 pm We put a lot of thought into ours and designed that side of the house around the outdoor plans. It's still a work in progress but when finished there will be a 4.7m x 3m alfresco with outdoor lounge furniture and an LCD TV mounted on the wall. There is an add-on metal patio attached to that which is 13m x 4m which will house an outdoor kitchen, a separate area for the spa and the outdoor table in the middle. The whole thing will be enclosed with PVC zip track blinds Here's a pic of the alfresco and patio roof so far; http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i60/Hels-b/House/19Nov6.jpg Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Re: How big is your alfresco/patio? 16Nov 20, 2009 6:14 pm Our house is still in construction but our alfresco will be about 8m wide by 4m deep. I think it's going to be a great size. We were going to extend over to the right hand side (left in the photo) as well but decided to make it more of a courtyard feel with grass, a water feature, nice lighting & plants etc. Here is the pic of our alfresco from the back: Re: How big is your alfresco/patio? 17Nov 20, 2009 8:05 pm Holy smokes there are some really big ones on here! - Ours is a mere 4.5m x 5m Building on the Sunshine Coast - Land settled 22nd July 2009 Building contract finally signed (after much deliberation on our part) 11th November 2009 Building commences 25th January 2010 - small local builder End of June - almost completed fit out 26th July - MOVE IN DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Re: How big is your alfresco/patio? 19Nov 20, 2009 8:25 pm Ours is 7.920 x 5m. we doubled the one offered by the builder. Sorry the end is cut off in the pic. We wanted enough room to put the table and walk around it without falling of the edge. the fact that we cut into our back lawn, didn't matter because it's still usable living space whether it's a hard surface Al Fresco or a lawn, in my opinion. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: How big is your alfresco/patio? 20Nov 20, 2009 8:53 pm the alfresco (under cover) will be 3.8 x 3.6 but the total decked area will be 7.4 x 7.0. now to get that job done... ’’Quondo Omni Flunkus Mortati ’’ If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.
