Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 10, 2007 10:26 am Is 7m x 7m overkill???
I need to comfortably fit two cars and hang a couple of kayaks on the wall? I figure cars are almost 2m in width x2 =4m + 1m each side and in between Legnth wise cars are about 5m so allowing for an extra 1.5m will allow me to put in a work bench of sorts? Your thoughts??? Milt, Re: garage width and length? 2Jul 10, 2007 10:28 am I think 7x7 is a great size.
Go bigger if you can! You can never have too much garage space. Re: garage width and length? 4Jul 10, 2007 10:50 am Sounds like you will have plenty of space.
One house I looked at has a 7.5 x 5.5m double garage as standard. I thought that was excellent. My double garage will be minimum 40sqm. Then I'll be adding a 3rd garage as a workshop. Re: garage width and length? 5Jul 10, 2007 10:52 am We will just fit our 2 cars in the garage :O Do people normally get their garage made bigger?
Thankfully we have plenty of yard room for a 6x6 metres shed (which is flippin expensive!!) Our Adenbrook home was completed in September. Garage is as important to men as wardrobe/kitchen to women... Re: garage width and length? 8Jul 10, 2007 12:56 pm Now I am thinking if I should have made the garage bigger...we do not need to store anything in it except cars due to the aforementioned 6x6mtr shed, but still....
How much extra does it cost to get your garage bigger? Our Adenbrook home was completed in September. Re: garage width and length? 9Jul 10, 2007 1:17 pm I think a 6 x 6 m garage is plenty of room if all you want to do is store two cars and have a workbench at the fornt.
Typical car = 1.8 m wide by 4.4 m long and leaving 0.8 m gap on either side, which is generous, and fitting in a workbech with a 0.6 m depth. Width = 0.8 + 1.8 + 0.8 + 1.8 + 0.8 = 6.0 m Length = 0.3 + 4.4 + 0.7 + 0.6 = 6.0 m I think you only need a bigger garage if you have exceptinoally large cars or want to add extensive storage, in which case widening by 0.3 m (or a touch more) gives you an entire wall of cupboards. How much extra does it cost to get your garage bigger? Very roughly, it costs about $400 to $700 per sqm. Of course it depends on your builder and the ease or complexity of massaging your particular house design. For instance Clarendon will charge $11,400 for a third 18sqm garage. Thats $633 per sqm. Allcastle will charge $7600 for a third 18sqm garage. Thats $422 per sqm. So you'll have to ask your builder. Thanks again for this information.
