Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 16, 2009 8:18 pm Will be building a new house soon and am thinking of using the space between the ceiling and the roof (is that what you call the attic?) as storage space or an extra room. How would I know if it will be able to support the load or how much load will it be able to support? Do I need to have my builder make any structural changes? Thanks. MyHomeoneThread Our Oxford22 Blog Re: Attic/ceiling space for storage 2Nov 16, 2009 8:45 pm have a look on your plans & check out the height that you will have in there some of the 22° roof's constructed from trusses leave little room to store items in, if you have a 25° or 27.5° roof you will have a lot more room either way check on the position of you "man hole" as it will be much easer to fit an attic ladder if the man hole is in a hall way giving you room to pull down the attic ladder if you have the room it may be worth asking the builder if he can line the area around the man hole with yellow tounge to give you somewere to sit your boxes ect as its a lot harder to remove roof tiles afterwards to put the timber down for the floor cheers rocket Re: Attic/ceiling space for storage 3Nov 16, 2009 9:36 pm You could ask the builder for attic-type trusses, that way you won't have diagonal trusses going everywhere, blocking your path. They are more expensive (I have no idea how much), but it could be well worth it. Perhaps you could ask for them in just one area of the house. Alternatively do what we're doing, ask for no ceiling in the garage, then add some mdf panels when you're ready. You can really use anything you want the main consideration would be how it looks once painted/finished - or the look you want. Cabinetmakers use MDF because its cheap… 2 9957 Cupcake.girl This really depends on your local council. Each one has different definitions and ways to calculate contributions.
