Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 13, 2009 6:22 am Well we have finally got our Preliminary Contract from the big M, and I am rather surprised at how much it costs to have translucent glazing to the front door, sidelights and hilite - $750. I have heard that you can buy the film from Bunnings and do it yourself. Has anybody done this and does it look good? Was it hard to do or should we just cough up and leave it to the professionals? I recently had acid etched glass in a front ensuite window and had my door sidelight louvres done the same and it looks great. It is basically a white glass that lets the light in but you can't see through it, maybe a shadow at most. It was quite cost effective compared to translucent, maybe a couple of hundred buck extra. Re: Translucent Glazing 3Nov 13, 2009 8:51 am We did it ourselves for added privacy to our ensuite French doors. When I say "we", I mean my impatient husband, who couldn't wait till I got home. It's a bit fiddly, and you'll end up with little air bubbles under the film if you don't do it right - think badly applied contact on text books. I'm going to rip it off and re-do it myself one of these days, but it's not driving me crazy enough just yet to bother. I suspect it's one of those jobs where you wish you had three hands. At around $16 a roll, it's probably not a big deal if you muck it up the first time....although that depends on how much glass you have to cover. We only needed one roll, so I'm not crying over the money spent. Re: Translucent Glazing 4Nov 13, 2009 9:51 am Yes I had same thing to deside im building with PD access range and my front door will cost $332 and both sides is $250 so its expensive but i dont have to worry in the bubbles. Its a front door. everyone will see this door. I went with $3320 only and maybe i will put blinds on the side lights cheers Re: Translucent Glazing 5Nov 13, 2009 2:37 pm Northbound Well we have finally got our Preliminary Contract from the big M, and I am rather surprised at how much it costs to have translucent glazing to the front door, sidelights and hilite - $750. We use the film all the time as an option. Not the Bunnings variety but LG. We never have bubbles and it always looks good. There's a spot on there where you put in your measurements and it gives an instant quote. Will take a look at that one though, we don't need a lot.
