Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 12, 2009 11:59 pm Hi, Our slab went down today, and a few showers went through when the pad was just about finished. Does anyone think we may have any problems with the slab from this. eg cracks, dust. Some of the wet areas look a little crumbly around the pipe entries.... If the Builder doesn't seem concerned should we talk to an independent inspector for a report, even if it just for peace of mind? Some photos... (most of the wet area pipes have this cracking - I assume because of the rain?) I'm not sure about your slab... i know that rain is apparently good for it as it allows it to settle better (i'm sure someone else will be able to give you the technical terms!!!) What has your builder said about the cracks? If your still concerned then definitely get an independant person to inspect (onc_artisan should be able to advise better on this!!) Let us know how you go viewtopic.php?f=31&t=22766 - my build thread! Time waits for no man. Unless that man is Chuck Norris. Re: Slab Down Today with Some Rain 3Nov 13, 2009 10:47 am Thanks for the welcome Jody We'll be talking to the Builder today on a number of issues and update here on how we go. With regarding to the rain, or water on the slab, its normally a good thing after it sets and for the following days from what we understand. We'll ask the builder if they recommend watering it at all to improve the end result. Cheers Re: Slab Down Today with Some Rain 4Nov 13, 2009 12:27 pm Hopefully Onc will see this and offer his expertise Congrats on getting a slab Blog: http://bluemistkids.blogspot.com "Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark, and professionals built the Titanic." Re: Slab Down Today with Some Rain 5Nov 13, 2009 2:26 pm Spotted The rain has cause an overburden of slurry around the pipe. Probably when the rain came they had to deal with 'other' priorities. i.e. keep finishing as I imagine it wouldn't have been too cold (<20c) so would still have started curing(gel set)... aiming to get a finish possibly with 3 guys doing the pour. Then it looks to me like they had a breakdown with the machine finish. Could be an optical illusion but to me it looks like they made it about half way. They then had to deal with the wet area that would have been flooded. ...and the rest of the slab by hand (just guessing) and rough finished... when they were pouring the wet area the penetration was not compacted and 'low' at the pipe, as the concrete had become quite solid was difficult to finish... If there was NO extra concrete remaining in a lump( overage - sometimes a barrow full) on site. It is possible they were also short by a smidge and filling the low with slurry. Slurry is mostly cement and a bit of sand and a lot of water. The rapid hydration of the cement and evap of water has lead to severe cracking. I suspect it will only be a few - maybe 20mm deep?? I would be knocking it out and filling with epoxy mortar. A tile, I imagine will be covering the cracks if not removed. Being a SOG (slab on ground) it is a termite entry point.(potentially) I have seen under tiles with white ant tracks along the tilers notch marks leading to a timber wall. The colour of the aggregate is red, is it scoria? Soz for the rant... All is not lost.... but I gotta go to work Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Slab Down Today with Some Rain 6Nov 15, 2009 10:47 pm Thanks onc_artisan The Super didn't get back to me on Friday, hopefully he'll call back tomorrow. Speaking to a friend he said they probably sprayed the pad with some compound to assist the curing process, hence there no need to spray the pad with any additional water. The surface of the main slab did feel slightly slightly sticky in the afternoon, and it does explain the hose drag marks? Below are some more photos from today 15/11. I think there was a small amount of concrete leftover in the end, next to the slump tests? I assume the knockouts at the edge of the slab were to drain the water. We think/hope as you suggest they can just clear, fill and seal as required - we do have termites in the neighbourhood . The other larger one is a floor waste pipe in which an 80mm?? floor waste grate will go. I think the other one is a shower??
