Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 10, 2009 5:30 pm Hi, we are just having our floating floor laid and i'm tossing up whether to pay extra to get it glossed. It has a satin finish on it already which is nice but doesn't have the wow factor of gloss. I know gloss shows more scratches but may offer more protection against water splashes. Not sure what to do..... Re: Gloss or Satin timber floor? 2Nov 10, 2009 7:27 pm I dislike gloss very much and if they do a bad job it can often look terrible and only reflects everything into the floor around it. It depends on what look you prefer. Personally I prefer the satin finish over the gloss. Re: Gloss or Satin timber floor? 6Nov 11, 2009 8:45 am Satin is much cleaner. We have gloss in our house now and you can see every mark, scratch, tiny bit of dust etc... Our new house we are getting satin - it actually seems more resitent to scratches and I think it actually looks nicer. Plus if you already have the satin... so less hassle for everyone in the long one Re: Gloss or Satin timber floor? 8Nov 11, 2009 9:16 am Speaking personal choices I'd go with satin only. It is a calm, soft and warm finishing. Re: Gloss or Satin timber floor? 9Nov 11, 2009 9:43 am Thanks so much for all your replies-although I think i'm more confused now as I had had in my head that i'd be going gloss since I started building the house, now i'm not so sure. We don't have kids but may in the future. Does anyone know if you get better protection from spills in the kitchen with the gloss option. I like the look of gloss but I can see the appeal of the satin too-it would drive me mad if after a year or so you could see lots of scratches if you had the gloss. Is gloss more problematic in the future if you need to resand the veneer after a few years? Is there anyone who has done the gloss option and is happy with it? Re: Gloss or Satin timber floor? 10Nov 11, 2009 10:36 am Our floors were laid with a satin finish. Our house is very contemporary and modern and the satin finish didn't seem to go with that feel. So I put a layer of gloss finish over it. Much happier with gloss. Yes the gloss is harder to keep clean, and it shows every scratch, but it still brings a smile to my face when I walk in the door. Re: Gloss or Satin timber floor? 11Nov 11, 2009 10:43 am I agree with Staz. Gloss feels more vibrant and modern, if that makes any sense. Yes everything shows up on it, but when clean it looks fantastic. We just had our floors redone after a number of years and we went gloss again. I chose gloss for my floors (pictures in my sig) as it suited the style i was going for. Get what you like the look of, if you love it it won't matter if you have to clean it a bit more. Re: Gloss or Satin timber floor? 14Nov 11, 2009 1:39 pm I can show you all of my gray hairs for each scratch in the timber floor everytime my boy came screaming round a corner on his trike. You won't break the tiles, just his skull Re: Gloss or Satin timber floor? 16Nov 11, 2009 3:57 pm I'd go for satin but it's personal choice. It's easier to go from satin to gloss than vice versa. Re: Gloss or Satin timber floor? 17Nov 11, 2009 4:24 pm I have satin at the moment and it's great. I have a 6 and 4 year old and they love to make a mess! We have a light colour and you really can't see the dirt, dents and scratches that much. But the dust bunnies.... Building Atlantique 36 At fix stage Re: Gloss or Satin timber floor? 18Nov 11, 2009 6:33 pm It may be a little late to add to this debate, but traditionally gloss is by far the most durable. The hardest wearing is a 2 pack however it is a nightmare for the do it yourself person to apply. I would not recommend it unless you have some experience in using these. What ever the finish you choose be it satin or gloss, you will see scratches on darker timber floors. Satin finishes particularly the ones that have polyurethane and tungoil blend require some kind of buffing every now and then, and minimal moisture for cleaning. The gloss finishes simply require mopping and vaccumming. Eventually any clear finish will wear especially in the higher traffic areas. If you are applying the finish yourself, then ensure you apply 3 coats as per the instructions on the can with adequate dry time in between. Some floor finishes require 3 thinner coats in order to achieve the hardest finish, and to ensure proper drying. Personally I like gloss, and usually recommend it to our customers who have children and pets and on stairs. Just remember 3 coats which ever floor finish you choose! Re: Gloss or Satin timber floor? 19Nov 11, 2009 8:51 pm Thanks for all the food for thought. I'm told they can't do the gloss with the heat at the moment so I may have no choice but to stick with the satin finish and then if down the track I still think gloss is a good idea do it then (although a pain having to move all the furniture, fridge, etc) Re: Gloss or Satin timber floor? 20Nov 11, 2009 9:31 pm I personally prefer the Satin finish and look. I think Satin is more of a contemporary/modern look and the gloss is more classic...so depends which look you are going for. What about Semi-gloss as a compromise?
