This is going to be a "silly" question. But does anyone know where you can get some nice large long front door mats. We have a double door entrance and don't really want to have 2 side by side. I'd prefer to have a largish one centred. Also what are people putting on the tiles in the entry. ie what kind of mat. Cheers Re: Front Door Mat 2Jul 07, 2007 2:08 am Not silly at all!
Decisions like this almost never get the 'time of day' that they deserve. Well chosen, large, efficient doormats can save you valuable hours each week in time you would otherwise need to spend cleaning to recover the soil that has entered your home. This soil can contaminate carpets, causing premature wear & tear, scratch hard floors, and cause all sorts of soiling and damage. The old adage ' prevention is better than cure' rings true here! It is fair to invest at least $100 on a good exterior doormat at every entrance to the home. Also, a secondary mat should be placed just inside each door. These can save you thousands of $$$ over the years. Good exterior doormats will be weather-proof, effectively remove abrasive sand and grit from the shoes, and collect it in the bottom of the mat for disposal or beneath the mat. This must be regularly emptied of accumulated soil. Coir mats are pretty useless. Forget them! A good type is 3M Nomad, cushion plus matting. This is available in continuous lengths and about 900 or 1200mm wide, in various colours. To find this or other types of good matting, look up the yellow pages under MATTING. There will be specialist industrial matting suppliers or major cleaning supply stores that have a range of good doormats. Remember: the bigger, the better. For inside, a secondary mat should be placed. A wool or nylon carpet is ideal. This should collect finer dust as well as moisture from the shoes in wet weather. Its best to have several carpet mats, and once one becomes soiled, put another in its place. Then when you have your carpets cleaned annually, he can clean all the mats at the same time. These carpet mats should also be regularly emptied of accumulated dust & soil. Their purpose is to intercept and collect stuff BEFORE it has a chance to walk right through the home. Diligent attention to this (prevention) will save a great deal more cleaning and damage to your floors (cure). in my home, I designed it with a 2.5 sq/m entrance. This has quality carpet fitted to provide the function described. The entrance flows into an open-plan sheok timber floor that leads to various carpeted rooms. So, the entrance carpet has a sacrificial role in protecting all the other floors from soiling and damage. The entrance carpet has regular vacuuming, and when it gets too shabby, its a small area that is easy to replace. What I've described here is a preventative maintenance strategy. Every home or building should have such a strategy from day one. Ash. Building Standards; Getting It Right!
