Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Colourbond vs Tiles 21Nov 10, 2009 8:45 am Personally I think it depends on the house and the look you are trying to achieve. My Better Half and I chose tiles, I have seen the same house we are building but done with a colorbond roof and it looks very different. My builder did not charge extra or less for a colorbond roof. But then the builder suggested a simpler design for the roof - shallower pitch, no hips & valleys etc, and it came in at the same price. Something to do with "roof plumbing" being more complicated when using colorbond. Anyway we will have to see the elevations to see if the house will look like a shed! In SA, colourbond doesnt seem any dearer than tiles though In term of the price itself, I would imagine colorbond should be dearer as metal has to be treated twice before the complete product is produced whereas with tile, once is enough. Some designers suggest tile is a more expensive option because it is heavier so structural requirement has to be increased. But with project builders, tile roof is always the base finish therefore the structural side of it will not matter (the structure could take tile then it has no problem taking colorbond); the extra money you are paying to upgrade to colorbond is simple the difference in prices I reckon. I myself find colorbond is a better choice cosidering different factors including the look, low maintaince, longer life...
