Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 04, 2007 10:45 am Just wondering after the "how big is your block?" thread (I'll show you mine if you show me yours), are people generally happy with their block size or would they have preferred a (lets say never subdividable) bigger block in the same area or maybe a smaller block at the same price? Re: Would you have preferred a bigger or a smaller block? 2Jul 04, 2007 11:07 am Would have liked a bit bigger....though will let you know once we are in and maintaining it!!
Though knowing a few people on several acres in the area, they work 5 days a week, then come home and have to spend two days of the weekend maintaining the land.....not really a lifestyle that appeals! There must be a compromise somewhere...maybe an acre would be good! PS - 3xb...whats the construction status? Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Re: Would you have preferred a bigger or a smaller block? 3Jul 04, 2007 11:17 am I was on 555 sq m, and that was a great size for mowing - 15 minutes & the back is done, another half hour & the front was finished too. It was an average 3 bedroom, single garage etc home, with an additional double garage in the backyard, along with large garden beds & a gazebo area (eating into more lawn area!)
Now I am on 765 sq m, and it's a lot more work. We have decided to do a lot more garden area, to lessen the lawn amount, but there's still a lot to mow. The (large) garage is under the house, saving at least 110 sq m of footprint on the block that would otherwise have eaten into the yard. I think around 700 is a 'sweet' compromise between not enough yard, and too much to mow for a small footprint house - or double storey. For a large single storey, my opinion is more like 900m. Re: Would you have preferred a bigger or a smaller block? 4Jul 04, 2007 11:21 am Ideally we would like an acre....Not to be in the burbs though....
As it stands we are quite happy with out block size although a choice of wider blocks would have been nice......We could have gone up in block size but that would only have changed the length of the block. Re: Would you have preferred a bigger or a smaller block? 5Jul 04, 2007 11:31 am Of course I'd prefer my block (607smq) to be a bit bigger. 700sqm would have been nice, but in my area that would mean another 200k, as you'd be competing with all the developers who would propose to build town houses on it. So overall I am happy with what i have under the circumstances. Re: Would you have preferred a bigger or a smaller block? 7Jul 04, 2007 11:36 am If I had neighbours surrounding me then I would have liked a bigger block.. just for a bit of buffer zone.
Bit having only one neighbour Im happy with my block size.. less to maintain but big enough for the house I want. Re: Would you have preferred a bigger or a smaller block? 8Jul 04, 2007 11:54 am When I get some gree stuff down, it wont take me long to do the back, its only 18 x 5 m of grass, and the front is decorative rock. The rest is deck or house out the back. Block size is 18 x 31m Adrian B Re: Would you have preferred a bigger or a smaller block? 9Jul 04, 2007 11:57 am Reasons for wanting a big block (not in any particular order):
- More space around is pleasant. I don't like looking at a fence from my windows. - More space = more privacy. - Bigger block means a bigger shed - Bigger block means a ride on mower (i.e. another toy). I'm sure I can think of other reasons! Perry Re: Would you have preferred a bigger or a smaller block? 10Jul 04, 2007 12:02 pm we wanted an acre or two but we could not afford it as we did not want to live too far out of town.
We are happy with our current 1122sqm but hope to get a bigger block in the future when we are older! Our Adenbrook home was completed in September. Re: Would you have preferred a bigger or a smaller block? 11Jul 04, 2007 12:26 pm Quite happy with our 576m2. Wasn't really sure how big that was in the context of things until they put slab down and we started thinking about what to do with the rest of the 'leftover' space. Maybe an even 600m2 would've been good, too.
I just wish there wasn't that easement there so that I could put the shed in the back corner instead of...well, don't know where it's going at the moment. [sneakersss] Re: Would you have preferred a bigger or a smaller block? 12Jul 04, 2007 12:43 pm missy,
build it over the easement..... Worst case scenario you might need to rip up the concrete but it is highly unlikely... We are putting 2 truckloads of dirt and a retaining wall over ours....schhhh Re: Would you have preferred a bigger or a smaller block? 13Jul 04, 2007 12:47 pm mattwalker missy, build it over the easement..... LOL I won't be snitching on you. If you don't snitch on me. Haha [sneakersss] Re: Would you have preferred a bigger or a smaller block? 14Jul 04, 2007 12:52 pm mattwalker missy, We are putting 2 truckloads of dirt and a retaining wall over ours....schhhh Ummmah! I'm dobbin' on you! Matt's right - worst case, you'll need to move the shed in the (very unlikely) event that the underground pipes need to be worked on. I wouldn't worry too much about a garden shed. A big garage with a concrete floor might be a different thing! Cheers Perry Re: Would you have preferred a bigger or a smaller block? 15Jul 04, 2007 1:07 pm perryr I wouldn't worry too much about a garden shed. A big garage with a concrete floor might be a different thing! Cheers Perry It's not even a garden shed. It's more a storage shed that's like less than 2m wide and less than 2m deep. It's just to hide those unsightly 'man tools' and the future lawn mower for the grass we probably won't be able to grow. Hehe And don't people have stuff they don't need but can't throw away? So, you need somewhere to store it INCASE you need it. Or is it just me? Oh, and sorry 3timesbuilda for distracting from the original question. It was Matt's fault! *points finger at Matt* [sneakersss] Re: Would you have preferred a bigger or a smaller block? 16Jul 04, 2007 2:18 pm YSSIM It's just to hide those unsightly 'man tools' ... Hmmm. That's not very nice. We normally use underpants for that, and they are not so "unsightly". That's what I call distracting a thread.... remember: you started it!
