Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 03, 2007 2:11 pm We are looking to build as per the attached plan...with a few modifications. We will be turning the studio into a bedroom (and moving the window so that it is on the east side) Our block runs north-south, so the living areas will be facing north.
We are unsure about what to do at the back, as we want to incorporate some type of alfresco area. Currently, there are two 'cut-out' areas that fall under the roof line. The other dilema is that the rumpus room sits directly over the stairwell/family area, so there are no eaves as such over the family room part. We are trying to decide what to do - build a pergola extending out across the whole area (which may not necessarily look that great), extend the roof line to create eaves over the family room part (which then will not let much sun through in the meals part), or even change the roof line near the meals area and build a solar pergola type thing. Or do we alter the back so that it is all even (with no cut out parts) and build something from there. Hope that makes some sort of sense! What would you do?? Thanks Kate http://www.glenvill.com.au/prentice/hom ... orplan.asp Re: Outdoor area - what would you do? 2Jul 03, 2007 2:32 pm I guess it all comes down to personal use of space.
Personally I don't like the separated 'alfresco' areas. I would be extending the meals room and the studio (bedroom) to create a straight edge at the back of the house. Make sure there are eaves on all the north facing roof line, then build a patio/outdoor area where suitable and give it a translucent or even clear roof to let the light and winter heat in. Re: Outdoor area - what would you do? 3Jul 03, 2007 2:39 pm I love alfresco, so if it's mine, I will extend the roof and get a huge alfresco at the back. If the meal/study is a bit dark, just install a few of those roof light thing to bring in more sun light.
