Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 31, 2009 6:17 pm After 35 agonizing weeks, with some frustration tossed in, we now have the keys! Joyous times, until I noticed that the fuse box is empty of circuit breakers. I know they were there before (practical completion only one week prior) but now they're gone - they haven't been stolen, because the wires have been neatly tied off waiting for more circuit breakers...so where did they go?? Is it standard for a company to leave the fuse box empty? Is this something that my local electricity company will install when they officially connect power for the first time? Or, do I need to call an electrician out to install them? Re: Handover done, but where are the circuit breakers?? 2Oct 31, 2009 7:07 pm Can't speak for Sydney, but in Melbourne the circuit breakers are all installed... There should be nothing to do but contact the power company and get your account set up. I can't see a certificate of occupancy being issued without them, given they're an electrical safety requirement. Re: Handover done, but where are the circuit breakers?? 3Oct 31, 2009 7:14 pm From my council's website: In order to obtain an Occupancy Permit we require a •Form 5 - Application for Occupancy Permit; •Plumbing Certificate; •Electrical Certificate; •Insulation Certificate; and •Mechanical Certificate to verify that the work completed on your property complies with the relevant building legislation. Your occupancy permit will not be issued until the Certificate of Compliance is sighted and copied by our office. I can't see an electrical certificate being issued if circuit breakers haven't been installed, since they're compulsory in all new homes. I'm sure that doesn't vary from state to state. Re: Handover done, but where are the circuit breakers?? 4Oct 31, 2009 7:30 pm When I built my last house (in a new estate) - two days before hand over an electrician working on another house came over to my house and took out all the circuit breakers so he could put them in the house he was building. He neatly tied off all the wires though (gee, thanks). My neighbour had moved in a couple of days before hand and saw it all... I'm not saying this is what happened to you... but it's not impossible. Re: Handover done, but where are the circuit breakers?? 5Nov 01, 2009 12:57 pm Given that we didn't actually check the fuse box on hand over, how can we prove to the builder that they didn't disappear in the 24 hours after hand over? (Before we noticed them gone) Thinking back, we know they were removed earlier in the week because we did test some more light switches (which didn't work, but I assumed the breaker was off) and the alarm system stopped "chirping". Hopefully this won't be an issue and the builder will do something about it, but we were hoping to have power for our tradies which begin work on Monday and I don't relish the thought of shelling out our money to correct the problem in a timely fashion. 1) I had requested R6 ceiling insualtion batts, however I noticed that on some areas there are huge gaps which will allow hot air to sweep in, and also noticed black/grey… 0 918 Joe, it depends on your certifier but we are noticing the ones we deal with are really cracking down.
