What is the difference between the two? Is one cheaper than the other?
Thanks

Slab: what you drink after cutting a tree down. Sorry, couldn't resist. Re: Stumps or slabs 3Jul 03, 2007 1:15 pm I don't know about the price, but certainly in Melbourne the slab is used 95% of the time. The only times I've heard of stumps being used was in areas subjected to flooding, where the house needed to be higher off the ground.
The obvious advantage of the stumps is your ability to always get under the house if needed. Handy for any future electrical work or anything of similar nature. The slab probably has better longevity. The house won't need restumping in the future. I'll leave the rest to the experts to comment. Re: Stumps or slabs 5Jul 03, 2007 2:19 pm I haven't checked recently Jezz but it used to be cheaper with stumps when the slope of the land had greater than 600mm fall. Re: Stumps or slabs 6Jul 03, 2007 3:52 pm My place has greater than 600mm fall and I have Dwarf walls which are effectively below and above ground foundations built up by bricks to suit the slope with timber bearers on top of them then the floor etc.
Depends where you are. My sister in FNQ is building on stumps as they want airflow under the house and also less chance of termites getting in via unseen concrete to dirt connections. Steve Re: Stumps or slabs 7Jul 03, 2007 4:51 pm In the context of the question as I took it Steve, both you are your sisters would come under 'stump' type construction. Re: Stumps or slabs 8Jul 04, 2007 10:35 am Slabs provide a thermal mass so may be better in colder areas. Re: Stumps or slabs 10Jul 04, 2007 11:54 am jezzcb Thanks everyone for your replies. They were very helpful. Even mine !!??!! Re: Stumps or slabs 12Jul 04, 2007 6:48 pm Hi Peter - well I grew up in QLD - so to me stumps are typically timber or steel posts that hold upthe house.
My small dwarf walls (stumps) are like little foundation walls above ground. Where as my sister is an owner designer and builder (She goes to work - he stays at home building the house they designed) And they are digging holes (with their own backhoe) and putting in the steel posts in cocrete which are their galvinaised stumps, with the house on top of that. Both designs are called stumps - OK Steve If you're in a flood zone, not only are you dealing with the importation of fill and laying it down in 150 lifts to achieve compaction, you're going to have to consider… 4 4934 Are they stumps or screw piles ? How much fill is there, is the site a class "P" ?
