Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 27, 2009 7:25 pm Well we are having a combination of Porcelain tiles and carpet for dining and lounge areas. This raises the question of getting levels correct. We are proposing to have the tiler screed all areas and then the tiles will be at the same level as the carpet more or less. if we don't do this then we woudl end up with a difference in level of up to 25mm. My question is whether screed is suitable for laying carpet on. Carpet layers say it is not ideal because the nails in the edge strips won't hold very well. Has anyone had any experience with this? thanks Dan C Re: Carpet on Screed 2Oct 27, 2009 7:50 pm Wouldn't your carpet be laid on underlay on the slab ? The tiles would be then laid on a screed tob bring them to the carpet thickness. Blog is now up - http://www.jbdave.blogspot.com/ Re: Carpet on Screed 3Oct 27, 2009 8:31 pm Hi jbdave The slab is not absolutely even, so before laying tiles, the tiler will put a layer of screed down to a depth of around 30mm. Then the tiles go on adding about 10-15 mm with glue. So finished height is around 40-45mm. Carpet with underlay will be at around 10-15mm thick and if this is laid on the slab it will be 30mm below the tiles. To achieve the same level we are therefore suggesting that the tiler screed everywhere and the difference between carpet and tiles will be small. any other thoughts out there? Dan Re: Carpet on Screed 4Oct 27, 2009 9:22 pm Far out a topping of 30mm... The floor must be pretty bad. there must be some comeback on the grano. Are you sure he is not having a lend of you?? That is 30 ltrs per sq mtr, how many mtrs need topped? Seriously, I have to question why 30mm, I mean you can get stuff called level thin.<5mm I topped a bad floor here about 15years ago for a carpet underlayment no problems so far. It was no more than 10mm. Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: Carpet on Screed 5Oct 27, 2009 9:52 pm We are laying Porcelain tiles, 450 x 450 with a rectified edge, the slab has +/- 5 mm tolerance however it needs to be better than that for that tile. Also the tile level needs to match with the wet areas which is up there. So I guess you could do 20 mm but that means you are possibly pretty thin in the high spots, the floor area in the longest open area is 75 sqm, it really needs to be flat. Screed i understand is a 4:1 mix of sand to cement, I am not usre what hardness this gets to and so the question is if the nails from the edge strips will hold or just break up the screed. thoughts Dan Re: Carpet on Screed 6Oct 27, 2009 10:22 pm Yep I get that But if the topping (aka drypack[sand & cement] other than propriety product for leveling) is 20mm thick then the concrete nails in the carpet edgestrip about 20mm will only be into topping. 75sq mtrs x 20mm = 1.5 CU mtrs 75sq mtrs x 30mm = 2.2 CU mtrs At least your doors will be a snug fit ... at the bottom at least.
