Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 26, 2009 5:54 pm Just about finished building our first home in the berwick area with a well known builder. All in all things going well, just one thing thats popped up lately that we kind of missed in the plans ( although it looks like there should have been room in the plan) The way that it is at the moment is the taps and proposed washing machine space are right infront of the sliding door opening, pretty much completely blocking it, rendering it useless. if the door and window were swapped so it slid the other way, from the opposing wall it would be fine. Pic shows what i mean, you can picture how this is not going to work with a washing machine on the floor there. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v283/PSI250/2009_10040029Medium.jpg The issue is the plans show it being this way and we didn;t pick up on it before signing, they've built it occording to the plan. would it be unreasonable and unrealistic to ask them to swap the door over so it opens from the opposing wall?? worst case we could pay to get it swapped as we didn;t pick up on it, but surely it would be a OH&S issue with the door being blocked. Just after peoples thoughts on whether we should push this or just let it slide, (pardon the pun!) Cheers, Cal. Re: proposed WM space blocking door 2Oct 26, 2009 6:11 pm There is just no common sense with some builders....I would def push them to see what they can do about it, let them know they are the professionals in this area and they should have picked up the layout would not work, the site supervisor should have noticed this error as soon as the door went in as the plumbing would have been there. Good luck Lou http://take2-customdesigndownslope.blogspot.com 07-10-09 omg they have cut the block 14-05-10 we finally have the keys Re: proposed WM space blocking door 3Oct 26, 2009 6:16 pm In the words of Mike Holmes, "Unacceptable"! Get them change things around. You ain't getting through that door when a WM is installed. Re: proposed WM space blocking door 4Oct 26, 2009 6:19 pm Did you alter the plans? Even if you did I would expect the builder to have picked this up. They are the ones with experience building houses, not you So it should be up to them to pick up the error. I wouldn't start off by trying to convince them it's their fault though - instead just ask how you're going to get through the door once the washing machine is installed, and with any luck they will see how silly it is and get it fixed. Does anyone know of any OH&S guidelines i can use to back me up? This is the straight off the plan laundry, the only thing we changed in the laundry was the stainless sink. Re: proposed WM space blocking door 6Oct 27, 2009 8:02 pm Luckily it can be fixed quite easily by swapping the door/window, but how ridiculous! What a mistake in the original drawing of the plans anyway, you would not think that you would need to look out for things like that. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: proposed WM space blocking door 7Oct 27, 2009 9:23 pm I don't know about OH&S but if the builder doesn't come around see if they are a member of HIA or masterbuilders. Show the photo to that organisation and see what they say. Only do this is btherl's suggestion doesn't work. Gravity. Its the law. On to the builder now! I hope you get it sorted out quickly and easily, any one can see that is a big stuff up! Re: proposed WM space blocking door 12Feb 03, 2010 7:54 am As soon as I saw that pic the first thing that popped into my mind was that your builders name starts with an S and ends in an imonds because my brother built with them and had the exact same issue! He got them to change the door but he realised as soon as the door went on so before plaster etc 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' When my parents built their house, the builders installed their sliding laundry door the wrong way around. The plan was correct, but they did it the wrong way. It was their mistake so they quickly got it sorted out. Hopefully your builder will see the error in their plans and get it sorted for you too. Re: proposed WM space blocking door 14Feb 03, 2010 2:32 pm I am building with a builder starting with S ending with imonds but my laundry sliding door is positioned correctly, not blocked by a WM once it's installed. Bring it up with your builder and it shouldn't be too hard to get it fixed, and if I were you I wouldn't pay extra to get this sorted. This is a mistake on the part of the builder's plan, not yours.
